Organization for Relief of Strangers
to City Seeks $20,000 to Purchase
Former Old Folks' Home—
Has Already Raised $12,000
The House of Shelter, located at 90
Division street, is making a campaign
for funds to purchase the property
lately vacated by the Old Folks'
Home at Brush and Edmund place.
A contract of purchase has been en-
tered into for the sale of the prop-
erty for $20,000, which the House of
Shelter society must raise in cash be-
fore the home can be occupied by it.
Twelve thousand dollars has already
been subscribed and every Jewish ele-
ment is being canvassed for the re-
maining $8,000.
The }louse of Shelter has outgrown
its old quarters owing to the increase
in population in Detroit. It was or-
ganized 24 years ago to give shelter
and aid to strangers to the city. It
furnishes food and shelter to anyone
applying for it for a period of three
days, during which time the applicant
may make other arrangements to be-
come permanently established in the
city. The new quarters at Brush and
Edmund place will accommodate 75
people. The Division street home ac-
commodates only 28-and the demands
upon it are far greater than its lim-
ited facilities.
The society has been reorganized
recently. It was formerly maintained
by weekly collections of 5 cents from
a few score folks on the east side, but
is now being supported by substan-
tial contributions from every element
in the Jewish. community. A full list
of all subscriptions will be published
in the near future.
At the last elections for city coun-
cil at Ostrochon, Russia, two Zion
ists were elected as special representa-
tives of the Jews. Among the repre-
sentatives of the other parties there
are "alsoa number of Jews.
