• THE JEWISH CHRONICLE leadership which has come to us has been due essentially to the splendid spirit of unchanging loyalty and of unswerving devotion and of unques- tioning co-operation between the rabbi and his people. I take this op- portunity to say thus publicly in the presence of my people, that from my heart I believe it, there is no congre- gation anywhere whose feeling of re- sponsibility to their leader is more pronounced and among whom there is a finer sense of fairness or a more beautiful spirit of personal devotion and true affection than here obtains.• If problems arc hard in a community' like this, the spiritual rewards of hon- est effort arc very great. Into such a community you arc coming, my friend, to teach and to preach, to work and to live. Into the hearts of this people you too shall make your way. May your words and your works and your manhood com- bine to make your ministry among us effective for good. Set your ideal high and live, up to it; be strong and ever true. Strength you will need, for disappointments and discouragements will come, but strong in your faith and sure of your duty, you will meet and overcome them all. Be true to your faith, to your people and to your better self. Then success shall meet you on your way, not the suc- cess perhaps That some men crave, hut that highest stuccess that spells itself out in the consciousness of duty done through the loyal service of God and of Man. As to our personal relationships, no word need here be spoken. When, upon the insistence through a very long period, on the part of officers and members of this congregation, that the work was growing too large for any one man to care for, they gener- ously gave me the opportunity of choosing the man whom I would care to have assist me, I chose you be- cause I . believed in you. Knowing you intimately through all your stu- dent years, I felt you to be a man not only of ability, but a man of high ideals, of spiritual nature and of con- secrated purposes. We shall work together , as men and as brothers, not stultfiying one another's individuality, but always rejoicing in each other's success. In the spirit of fellowship and of brotherhood then I welcome you to this place tonight. Take up your task, my young friend, and put into it the best that is in you. "rhe Brocho," "Become a blessing," as the injunction of the patriarch - phrases it, "Become a blessing," a blessing to your faith, a blessing to your country, a blessing to your peo- ple, a blessing to this community and congregation and, above all, a bless- ing to yourself. Amen. INSTALLATION SERMON BY RABBI SAMUEL S. MAYER- BERG. My Dear Friends: It is with a heart full of humility and yet with pride that I conic be- fore you tonight. I am filled with humility in the realization of my small powers to fulfill the tasks and duties which your call has placed upon me, and with pride because of the excep- tional and splendid opportunities which lie before me. It is with a feeling of awe that I realize what a ministry in Israel must convey, • It must carry with it a full knowledge of what the life of a serv- ant of God must be. It must he ab- solutely without blemish, it must beyond the possibility of human re- proach and its keynote must be serv- ice, service to God. That service to God can be rendered only by a spirit of loyalty to him, by an undivided de- votion to the Eternal, by a spirit of self-sacrifice, by a soul attuned to His cause. and by a spirit surrendered un- to Him. . I know many of the vexing prob- lems which confront me and every minister. I am aware of the many trials, the rebuffs and the spiritual sufferings which must be a part of every minister's life, if lie truly lives his ministry. And yet the knowledge of these things does not terrify me. I know that if I can accept what conies, with patience and with faith, no suffering can dim the compensa- tion arising from - the consciousness.of divine. tasks accomplished, of God's work done. To me also shall come temptations, and things which shall seek to lure me from_my sacred course, but God who controls the destinies of men, giving me strength, I shall triumph over them and remain steadfast and firm as a minister among God's nnointed ones. As to .my relations with this con- gregation, it is hardly necessary for me to state that on .my part there shall he an intense co-operation. Ev- ery act of mine shall be so chosen that it can only reflect credit upon it. To each individual member, may I vouch a trite and unflinching friend- ship, may I assure you in all sincerity that each one shall be met in a spirit of fellowship and against no man shall I bear animus? Let me aid you in your grief and let me rejoice with you in your joys; your confidences shall be locked in my heart and I shall be responsive to your calls at all times. Mine shall be the pleasure in as- sisting and directing the .spiritual life of those who in the years to come will take your places. To me this is a privilege and a duty unsurpassed by any other activity of congregational life. If we arc to perpetuate our faith, if we are to keep it burning brightly as a beacon in a Storm-tossed world, we must impart and implant it in the hearts of the future banner- hearers of our truth. What Judaism of \\ the future shall be depends upon our instruction and our work of the pres- ent.
