SELLING A What would you do with the industrious head of a family who becomes so sick that he must quit work, lose his pay, and ask us not alone to sustain his family, but to al4o send him to a hospital and pay for keeping him there? There's only one reply. With the rapid growth of De- troit comes the same rapid growth of poverty, but not the same rapid growth of contribu- tors. Many of our new-corners, good citizens as they are, arc model husbands and fathers in all respects, but one : failure to do their duty by the poor of their adopted city ; while it is usually thoughtlessneis on their part, I hope this 1V111 he a gentle re- minder. Then, again, many people fig- ure their charity expenditures at so small a percentage of their in- comes that they are placing the burden of the poor on others' shoulders. That isn't right, is it? Of course, there is the man who will tell you he does his own char- ity. Such a man is often a fervent believer in the adage, "Charity begins at home !" I have in mind, at this moment, a young man who made much money ill real estate. In 1916 he gave us no contribu- JEWISH CALENDAR 5678 -1917 tion. Hershman To those of you who have will deliver his weekly sermon, begin- never visited the Jewish Institute ning at 10 o'clock. WEALTHY bachelor said to me one day this year when I was asking him for his subscription, "This is a pros- perous year ; every one has work. Why do you need money?" The question didn't sound at all unreasonable. On the face of it, there should be no poverty. But that same contributor, had he visited the Jewish Institute and investigated sonic of the relief cases, would have solved the problem for himself. Non-employment does produce much poverty, but not all of it by ally means. Sickness is a large factor in causing misery. We have many cases Ivhcre parents are too sick to work and their ailments make it necessary to remove the children, in order that the conta- gion may not be communicated. _It is not generally knoivn that the L'inted Jewish Charities main- tains two large houses as homes for dependent children. The wife deserter is with us in good times, too. What can we do with the forsaken wife and her family of small children? I can hear your answer-- - Take care of them, of course." and looked into the systematic work done there, this is a special invitation to so do. It will open your eyes and I hope will open your hearts wider. Will you? Our institution has suffered two very severe losses during this year The death of Abraham Ben- jamin, our Secretary, not only severed very friendly :ties, but deprived us of the services of a most efficient official. And only a few days ago, the tragic death of Jacob G. Brown, our Vice-President, removed from us a man who was invaluable in every department of our organiza- tion, and his passing has left an aching void. There are two things we ask of our community—. Greater financial support to ac- complish greater results. More ac- tive co-operation from women and men who will give us of their time and energy. With both of these factors, money and effort, at our disposal, there is no limit to the good we can do. We should all be proud of the United Jewish Charities. Will you help to make it the model of its kind?
