children melted into the corners,
quiet and despondent, a cloud de-

if the last spark of hope had been
quenched in my heart. My wife
was the only one who seemed in-
different. She approached me,
placed her hand on my shoulder,
murmured, 'Well, what are you
worrying about, little fool? God
will help us by His own hiind.
Perhaps it is better thus.' "

RUSSIAN GOVERNOR TO BE
PROSECUTED FOR HIS
PART IN POGROM
IN 1915.
_W. Fort Street and River Rouge=
Petrograd.—The new Russian gov-
ernment has decided to prosecute the
former governor of Krasnoyarsk, Gol-
lolobov, for his participation in a po-
groin in 1915.
The pogrom in Krasnoyarsk created
a sensation, and it was the subject of
criticism and debate in the Duma. But
the censor did not permit any mention
of the dreadful slaughter to leak
through to the outside world.
The entire truth about the dreadful
occurrance is still unknown. By sonic
it is said that thousands of Jewish
women and children were murdered
in a bestial manner. Others contend
less were slaughtered. But all agree
that for horror there has been nothing
like it in the history of pogroms in
Russia, of which, needless to say,
there has been many.
When the first news of the pogrom
became known Gollolobov explained
to the government that it had been
precipitated by the alleged anti-pa-
triotism of the Jews. But the Episco-
palian churchman, Nikon, declared the
so-called explanation of the former
governor to be a falsehood, and
charged that during the entire period
of his incumbency he concerned him-
self almost to the exclusion of every-
thing else with fomenting pogroms.
Gollolobov had been a duma deputy,
where he became notorious for his vi-
cious anti-Semitic speeches.

WASHINGTON WELFARE CEN-
TER FOR JEWISH SOLDIERS.
Washington is today the leading
city of the country in providing for
the comfort and welfare of the thou-
sands of soldiers and civilians in and
about the city. Not only is Washing-
ton at present a mecca for soldiers in
all branches of the service, but thou-
sands of civilians have recently come
to the city and are engaged in assist-
ing the government in war work. The
Jewish people of Washington have
not been backward in providing for
the care and welfare of the Jewish
soldiers stationed . in Washington,
Fort Myer and Camp Meade.
Under the joint auspices of the
Washington Y. M. H . A., American
Soldiers' and Sailors' Welfare League
of the Independent Order of the B'nai
13'rith and the Federated Jewish Or-
ganizations, pretentious headquarters
have been established at 1347 Penn-
sylvania avenue N. W. Three floors
are occupied as recreation rooms,
reading rooms and lecture halls.
Special receptions and social func-
tions are held several times a week.
Although the headquarters have been
but recently established, they have al-
ready become exceedingly popular
with the soldiers and civilians in and
about Washington. To further ex-
tend tit; scope of activity and sys-
tematize the work of the several or-
ganizations co-operating in the wel-
fare center, Benjamin Levinson, Yale,
A. B., 1915, and LL. 13., 1917, has
been er:'mged as executive secretary.
The Jewish organizations of Wash-
ington extend a cordial invitation to
all soldiers and civilians who during
the coining months will visit the city
of Washngton engaged in government
service or connected with the army
and navy.
