THE JEWISH CHRONICLE

Why German Opinion Favors
Jewish Republic

Arguing front the standpoint of
Turkey's best interests, and those of
her ally, Germany, Gustave von Do-
beller, a leading publicist of the lat-
ter empire, has an article in the con-
servative (Junker) organ, Der Reichs-
bote, of May 22, favoring the estab-
lishment of a Jewish republic in Pal-
estine.
The article gives frank recognition
of the justice and practicability of the
idea itself; points out that Germany
w ould stiffer a tremendous political
loss if the project should be effected
by the entente allies; and presents the
anti-semitic (really the a-semitic)
point of view from a novel angle.
The English interest in the pro-
posed Jewish republic in Palestine,
says the writer, is due to its imperial
plan to establish a connecting link be-
tween Egypt and Palestine. This
plan must be forestalled by the cen-
tral powers.
"For many years the object which
our kaiser tried to accomplish by ar-
duous political effort has been the
making of a strong Turkey, the arti-
cle goes on. "More than ever in the
coming peace conference we shall
have to stand on the side of our Turk-
ish ally to help strengthen her intern-
ally. A method not to be despised
would be the establishment of a
strong Jewish state, tinder Turkish
suzerainty, in which the opportunity
will be given for each one to develop
in accordance to their national charac-
teristics. The Jew is a born colonist.
He understands better than any one
else how to make use of all oppor-
tunities. His industrial ability will
help him to utilize the natural re-
sources of Palestine, plant forests, and
sink wells, and be able to obtain the
best fruits of the soil. Even if he is
not a farmer himself, lie will find
enough laborers among the FeHalls
there. The commerce of Turkey will
be strengthened by a united Jewish

element, and this development will
reach so far some day that the Turks
will become conscious of their re-
sources, and will be in a position to
defend themselves against their ene-
mies, as well as their allies in Central
Europe.
"Even as a forest fire is put out by
a 'back-fire,' so we can meet Eng-
land's newest imperial plans by doing
what it intends to do. The establish-
ment of a Jewish state under a Turk-
ish protectorate will be a valuable
means of defense for ourselves, just
as the U-boat warfare is the only pos-
sible answer to the English blockade.
Fire against fire. The re-establish-
ment of a Jewish state is desirable
also for other reasons. In spite of
the recognition of Jewish ability, and
their never-changing characteristics,
we must admit that we suffer from
them. The Jew does not cease to be
a Jew, even if he becomes a Christian.
His nationality cannot be destroyed.
If he is a German, he fights for the
German fatherland, usually with rec-
ognized bravery and loyalty, but in
spite of all this, the Jew cannot deny
that above all his German patriotism
he is a Jewish patriot. All other
feelings are secondary to his Jewish
consciousness. Therefore, the Jew,
even though in the midst of German
spiritual life, finds himself in his deep-
est thoughts and feelings a stranger.
He works in our politics Avid' fanatical
zeal. He is a burden upon us, for
while the Jew can attract to himself
those who are without prejudice, he
himself always remains a stranger to
the German people in general. The
Jewish spirit unsettles everything,
makes it restless under the laws of
utility and reason. It cannot rise to
the heights of the great German cre-
ative spirit. The Jew is law! We arc
faith! Jewish emigration would rid
us from the burden on our politics,
our art, our press, and our commerce.
We shall be able to develop a German
national spirit without heeding the
ridicule of the Jews which is shown
daily in the columns of certain news-
papers. The establishment of a Jew-
ish state would give to the restless
Jewish nation new confines and a
positive—no longer an unsettling
power. As a commercial state it will
become a link between the continents
of Europe, Asia and Africa; as colon-
ists they will help to revive Turkey
in a manner necessary for Turkish
welfare. As the Jewish people favor
republics, let them, therefore, estab-
lish in the land of their forefathers a
republic, but the Jewish republic must
always be under the protection of the
Ottoman empire. It is always a ques-
tion of importance whether you or
your opponent has the key of the
door. The idea of establishing a Jew-
ish state is good for that power which
effects it."

HEADS OHIO ZIONISTS.

D. Gara, of Cleveland, was elected
head of the Ohio State Zionist Asso-
ciation at a meeting of the executive
committee held here early in the
week. He succeeds the late Rabbi
Margolies, who died in July.
Mr. Gara declared that he would at-
tempt to make Zionism a movement
of unprecedented strength in Ohio
and to perfect an organization which
would be a model for other states.
The election of Mr. Gara was unani-
mous and followed announcement of
messages from United States Supreme
Court Justice Louis D. Brandeis and
from Rabbi Stephen S. Wise indors-
ing Mr. Gara.
