THE JEWISH CHRONICLE

Morris Rosenfeld Writes Poem to
Stimulate War Relief
Campaign

Morris Rosenfeld, the noted Yiddish
"sweatshop" poet, whose fiftieth
birthday recently was celebrated by
Jews throughout the United States,
especially the Jews of the working
classes, of which he himself is a prod-
uct, having toiled for many years at
a machine, has written a poem dedi-
cated to the Jewish War Sufferers in
Europe and which has been sent
broadcast throughout the country as
part of an appeal of the Central Jew-
ish Relief Conimittcc) in connection
with Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New
Year, which occurs September 17.
Mr. Rosenfeld is regarded by Jews
generally as being the typical poet of
their race in America, and his poem,
which is entitled "Pity, 0 Israel," has
the advantage of the fact that he
knows the conditions affecting the
Jews on both sides of the Atlantic,
having been born in Russian Poland,
where he received his early education
and from where he emigrated to
America in 1882. The poem is as fol-
lows:
PITY, 0 ISRAEL.

Mine eyes are dimmed with terrors
black and red,
And grimly disappear
The sun and moonlight clear—
For pity in the Jewish heart lies dead!
The feeling heart, the grieving heart
is dead—
Mine eyes are dimmed with terrors
black and red.
Oh, bring a shroud, wherein with sad
disdain
I shall enwrap the heart so early slain,
That feels no more its nation's bitter
pain!
From lands laid waste by war has
vanished
Sweet love and pity has been ban-
ished;
Compassion in the Jewish heart lies
(lead—
My soul is gripped by terrors black
and red.
Did God in vain bring us across the
sea
To these blest shores of blood and
ravage free?
• Has He not at all His gifts before us
laid
That we, like Joseph, be our people's
aid?
Did Providence in vain transport us
here,
Removed the ancient curse and dried
the olden tear?

Oh, no; it was the Heavens lofty
thought
That happiness shall be for others
also wrought—
For God made us not happy, free and
well;

Nor has He blessed us with His
bounteous hand
For us alone to thrive in Freedom's
land—
Remember them who starve, remem-
ber, Israel!
I I ow can thy Jewish heart remain so
cold and dead
To sufferers who writhe in pain
and groan,
While fathers sell their cherished
flesh and hone
To still their hunger pains with crusts
of bread?
Oh, will my words, like winds upon
a sandy dune,
Wow forth aunt die forever,
And reach my brethren never,
And will not gentle, soothing help
come soon?

I feel, I see compassion's sweet
emotion—
The Jewish heart is waking,
The spirit's dawn is breaking,
And pity surges up—a sweeping,
boundless ocean!
She waves her hand,
And through the land
1 hear her song,
1 see a throng
Of Jews who give and strive
Their brethren to revive.
I hear the Lord rejoice,
I hear His Mighty voice:
" "l'is good and well
"With Israel—
"His future's clear—
"HI inscribe
"For his tribe
"A HAPPY YEAR."

STOP THIEF!

WHY Is This Cry Unnecessary When Your Car Is
Equipped With An

AUTO THEFT-SIGNAL

BECAUSE—

The best lock, be it ignition, clutch, gear, shift, throttle, steering wheel, gas
supply, or any other locking system—does not prevent a thief from circumventing
them at his leisure. No one will know, or even suspect that he is not the owner in
"trouble," while he tampers with it.

Our Fall Line of
WALL PAPERS
Is Complete

Put a THEFT-SIGNAL on the front wheel. See how quickly ANYONE tam-
pering with it attracts ATTENTION. His very action betrays the fact that he is
trying to take another's property; and should he attempt to drive the car, the THEFT-
SIGNAL proclaims by its thumping, bumping racket, that he is a THIEF;and it
leaves a well defined trail behind.

THE REWARD for the arrest of the MAN trying to steal that car—your car,
is $100.00. The MAN, WOMAN, or POLICEMAN, who doesn't want $100.00
can't be found.

Covering All Grades.

The AUTO THEFT-SIGNAL surely will attract attention and a thief clever
enough to steal a car, is too clever to attempt to steal the one that "Catches him in
the act."

SPECIAL ATTENTION is called to the fact that the Auto Theft-Signal is not
only highly endorsed by the POLICE DEPARTMENT, but ALL insurance compan-
ies as well.
$100 REWARD
The manufacturers of the THEFT-SIGNAL have a standing reward offer of $100
for the arrest and conviction as a thief of anyone operating a car with a THEFT-
SIGNAL in place, or tampering with the Signal.
Any person attempting to break the THEFT-SIGNAL—or run a car with a
THEFT-SIGNAL attached, should be arrested. Don't be afraid of making a mistake
—Just Call The POLICE.

It will pay you to see it be-

fore making your selection.
