financial literature of Russia. It
reassured the Russian people about
the soundness of their economic
conditions, warning them to give
no heed to the insidious calumnies
of the jealous German and Aus-
trian neighbors.
Blioch was one of the founders
of the agricultural credit institutes
which rendered so great a service
to the peasant class of Russia.
In the history of civilization
Blioch will forever live as the au-
thor of the famous six-volume
work, "The War of the Future"
(1898), which has been translated
into German, French and English.
It is this book which is said to
have inspired ex-Czar Nicholas II
to issue his historic peace edict
which resulted in the Hague con-
ference of 1899. The author showed
16 years before the outbreak of the
present war that the destructive
power of modern warfare and the
radical dislocation of the economic
and political fabric of society pro-
duced by world-war are certain to
represent such a calamity for the
nations involved therein that even
the greatest military successes
would not compensate the victor
for the desolation and ensuing
bankruptcy.
Although, for political and so-
cial reasons, Blioch early in his
life embraced Calvinism, he started
his last will with the words: "I was
my whole life a Jew and I die as a
Jew."
There were thousands and thou-
sands of Russian Marranos—i. e.,
crypto-Jews, in pre-revolutionary
Russia, who, as their brethren un-
der the Spanish inquisition, se-
cretly lived as Jews and were as
such considered by their own co-
religionists, but were outwardly
forced to wear the mask of the
holy synod. This time seems hap-
pily to be over. Church and state
will in all probability be separated
in the Russian republic of the fu-
ture. The Jewish "intellegenzia"
will no longer be forced to recur
to the universities of Switzerland
and France and the Haffkines will
be given a chance to place their
talent at the service of their own
fatherland.

AIRPLANE CLOSES . "MOVIES"
AT BEER SHEBA.
Of the many odd happenings during
the course of the war, perhaps the odd-
est and most difficult to believe, although
it is vouched for by the Associated
Press, is suspension of business by the
moving picture theater in Beer Sheba
because of the "pernicious" activity of
the British airplane fleet operating in
Palestine.
The "movie" bears the pretentious
name of "Hotel Abraham,". its proprie-
tor being inspired by a desire, no doubt,
to commemorate. an event in local history.
and has specialized in war pictures. The
tall masts of a wireless station tower
high over this oasis in the borders of the
Sinai desert, and the "movie" has not
lacked patronage, Beer Sheba enjoying
greater prosperity, because of the war,
than ever before in its history. British
airmen have been making nightly raids
upon Abraham's ancient country seat,
and the authorities decided that this
movie paradise made a shining target
which was of great help in placing suc-
cessful hits. They therefore ordered
the place closed, and thus, with one
stroke of the pen, deprived the "bohe-
mia" of Beer Sheba of its "great white
way."
