Detroit's Dynamic Leader Initiates
Conference of Associates at Chi-
cago—Make Volunteer Offer of
All Resources to Aid Food
Conservation Campaign.
Appreciating the necessity of co-
operating with the government in its
food conservation program, David A.
Brown, president of the General Ice
Delivery Co., one of the largest . ice
producing organizations in the coun-
try, called together the heads of simi-
lar Companies for a conferenCe at
Chicago last week. Mr. - Brown was
elected to preside over the meeting.
He emphasized the importance of the
ice industry in its relation to the
preservation of foods, and made valu-
able suggestions as to the proper or-
ganization necessary to work, in har-
mony with the government on a vol-
untary basis.
Mr. Brown exhorted his associates
to put aside all thought of personal
profit for the duration of war. "The
ice industry of this country must go
on record as backing to the very limit
the plans of Food Administrator
Hoover and President Wilson," said
Mr. Brown. "Before this conference
adjourns we should state in no un-
measured terms that our resources
of every nature, man power, machine
power and money power, are at the
disposal of the national directors.
"Any man who comes here with the
idea that he is going to learn how to
spend a penny and get a dollar in re-
turn has cheated himself," declared
the noted Detroiter, in his character-
istically dynamic manner. "We are
here as citizens of a democracy, to
give, and not to take. He who would
seek to enrich himself in this hour of
national danger might better make
arrangements right now to return
from whence he came."
The conference resulted in placing
the entire storage house capacity of
both the artificial and natural ice in-
dustries, totalling hundreds of mil-
lions of cubic feet, at the disposal of
the government. Cheaper ice for the
farmer, to enable him to conserve
both his vegetable and live stock pro-
ducts, was also pledged by the confer-
ence.

GERMAN JEWS GREET RUSSIAN
JEWS.
Look Forward to Time When Peoples
of Both Countries Can Work To-
gether for Freedom.
Evidently with the permission of
the authorities, the Central Executive
Committee of the German Zionist
FCticIation has sent a remarkable let-
ter' of greeting to their brethren, the
Zionists, in Russia.
The 'folloWing are excerpts from
this letter, which is signed by Profes-
sor Otto Warburg.'
"The 'Russian , Revolution
has
brought freedom to the Russian Jews.
Deeply moved, we greet our Russian
brothers. We were one with you in
your strivings and experiences. Your
fight was our fight. It was in your
struggle for freedom that we all found
our. deepest inspiration, and it was
this struggle that was most strongly
expressed in the Zionist movement.
Full of hope, we look to the future,
when we may work together for our
people in their national aspirations.
Out of the cry of the oppressed peo-
ples of Russia for freedom there came
loud and clear the demands of the
Jews of Russia. They made their de-
mands fully conscious of the deep sig-
nificance of the time through which
they were passing.
"The Jews of Russia has ever been the
truest, the most active, the most de-
voted, in the ranks of the Zionist
cause. Our gratitude is deep beyond
expression. Russian Jewry, freed
from its chains, and thoroughly aware
of its national aims, has infused new
hope and strength into our movement,
and has brought nearer the day of the
realization of our age-long ideal.
"The message was sent in the name
of the Central Executive Committee
of the German Zionist Organization,
anti obviously with the sanction of the
German authorities."
WILL OF LEOPOLD DE ROTHS-
CHILD CONTAINS NO CHAR-
ITY BEQUESTS.
$7,000,000 Estate Goes to Wife. and
. Sons—Impresses Charitable
Duties on Sons.
The full text of the will of the late
Leopold de Rothschild is given in the
latest issue of the London Jewish
Chronicle just received in this city. For
probation purposes the estate was sworn
at 1,500,000 ($7,000,000) "so far as can
be ascertained." The sons Lionel; Eve-
lyn and Anthony are named as execu-
tors.
Only one charitable gift is made, that
of £2,000 to King's College School. The
lack of further charitable bequests is ex-
plained in the following clause in the
will:
"I desire to state that I have not left
further charitable legacies as I know
that my sons will not be forgetful of
their duty in this respect."
The estate goes to the wife and the
sons. Leopold de Rothschild concludes
his will by the following paragraph:
"I desire to state that I have already
in my lifetime provided sufficient for the
requirements of my dear wife and I
have therefore not made any monetary
gift to her by this will, and further that
I have not hereby specifically divided
my property among my sons because I
have the utmost confidence in their good
sense and affection for each other and
.1 am sure that they will arrive at a fair
and equitable division in the same way
as my brothers and I did after our dear
father's death.
It is announced in the Berliner
Tageblatt that a socialist interpella-
tion will be presented in the reichstag
concerning the expulsion of Austrian
Jews from Posen, Oppein and Bres-
lau, although they have been resi-
dents there for decades and lived as
good and prosperous citizens.
