in charge of the campaign for funds.
"The purpose of the 'Gan Yelo-
dim" said Miss Rosenthal, "is the
training of the Jewish children in the
knowledge of their national heroes,
national songs, and to imbue them
with the Jewish spirit. We Jews in
America who are beginning to realize
that our Jewish young men and wom-
en arc taking little interest in things
Jewish, have come to the conclusion
that the fault lies with our own edu-
cational system. We must train the
Jewish child in Jewish matters in its
kindergarten stage, and we shall have
no fear of his allegiance to his faith
in later years."
Volunteers for "Flower Day" are
urged to report to the headquarters
at the Talmud Torah Building, 47
Division street, between Antoine and
Beaubien, at 8 a. in. sharp Sunday.

JEWISH WOMAN SACRIFICES
JEWELS FOR WAR RELIEF.
Following the example set by Na-
than Straus, who has offered his New
York . City residence for sale for the
benefit of the war sufferers, an Illi-
nois woman—Mrs. Charles Brady of
Rock Island — has given away her
jewels with the idea that they shall
be sold and the proceeds given to the
Central Jewish Relief Committee.
The. gift of the jewels, NVIIIC11 in-
chided Mrs. Brady's engagement ring,
was made through the Chicago Jewish
Relief Committee, NIrs. Brady saying,
in making the offer: "I realize what
suffering is and want to do something
for my peopl e who arc facing starva-
tion. If I could only do as my heart
dictates, I would he happy. My hus-
band and I were in business several
times and made several failures, but
the last time, with the assistance of
lily engagement ring, which I had
pawned to get money and which was
then the only ring I had, we made a
success. I am accordingly giving to
you this ring, which is doubly dear
to tne, together with two other rings,
a lavalliere, and a gold watch. The
value of these jewels is several thou-
sand dollars."

RECIPE FOR WAR BREAD AND
- CAKE.
"Meet Friedberg--
Wear Diamonds"
Griswold St. fist, Miles Theater
Recipes for war cake and war bread
have been sent to the headquarters
of the National League for Woman's
Service by a woman who says that
they are both economical, good to
eat, and will keep. Here they are:
\Var bread—Four ounces rye flour,
12 ounces whole wheat, 3 pounds
white flour, 1 quart water, yeast
cake, 1 ounce salt. This bread will
keen a week without getting stale.
\Var. cake (no butter, no eggs, no
milk: delicious)—Two cups of brown
sugar, 2 cups of hot water, 2 table-
spoons of lard, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 tea-
spoon cinnamon, 1 teaspoon cloves, 1
packet of seedless raisins. Boil all
together five minutes after they be-
gin to bubble. When cold add three
cups of flour, one teaspoon of baking
soda dissolved in one teaspoon of hot
water. Bake in two loaves about one
hour in a slow oven.
"I see that we save these days, and
particularly in bread and potatoes,"
said one of the women of the league
the other day. "If we have bread
served on the table for my husband
and myself four slices arc put on and
no more. I do not eat potatoes, so
now instead of having a dishful sent
up, two are served, which Fs all my
husband wants."
