Many Prominent Jews Killed in War.
London.—The victims of the war
include many prominent names of
Jews active in the communal and re-
ligious life of the community. The
latest victim was Lieutenant Denzil
A. Myer, one of the most promising
young men of London Jewry and for
many years the honorary secretary of
the Stepney Jewish schools.
His brother, Major Ernest A. Myer,
was killed on inspection duty in the
trenches in France on April 4, 1915.
Denzil Myer, who was born in 1876,
•was almost worshipped, by the hun-
dreds of Jewish children in Stepney.
He was an active spirit in the Jewish
Lads' Brigade and was possessed of a
fine religious feeling. He was killed
in action on February 25 in Meso-
potamia.
Signor Santelia, the noted Jewish
architect and leader of Italian Futur-
ists, has been killed in battle. As a
Socialist he was, before the war, an
outspoken 'anti-militarist. During the
war, however, like many of his col-
leagues, lie completely changed his
sentiments and joined as a volunteer.
He was wounded on a few occasions
and was the recipient of a silver
medal.

Some confusion exists in the minds
of worshippers as to the meaning and
motive of the well-known section of
the liturgy called Kaddish (Holy).
There are six distinct modes of this
formula. One of these is used to
mark the close of the principal sec-
tions of the divine services. In its ab-
breviated or complete form the Kad-
dish serves as a sort of doxology after
the reading of the lesson from the
Scriptures or the sermon. The Rab-
binical Kaddish was a formula of
sanctification recited after the study
of a portion of the rabbinical litera-
ture.
From the schools this doxology
passed easily into the synagogue, as
scholars have frequently pointed out.
The combination of individual with
communal hopes therein expressed,
the tone of profound submission to
the Divine will pervading the utter-
ances and the comforting referenes to
the hopes of the future, have caused
this noble outpouring to be recited
for centuries, more especially by the

Brooklyn, N. Y.—The unification of
all the Jewish charities of Brooklyn
was announced at a dinner given at
the Unity Club, Bedford avenue and
Dean street, Brooklyn, last night.
The charitable organizations hereto-
fore conducted by the orthodox Jews
have been joined with those conduct-
ed by the reform Jews,.. and all will
be operated under the Brooklyn Fed-
eration of Jewish Charities. A most
important concession made by the
reform Jews was that the orthodox
dietary laws should be observed in all
the Jewish charitable institutions and
hospitals.
