The American Jewish Congress
which is to strive for the attainment
of full rights for the Jewish people
in all lands where such rights are
denied them, and which is to take up
the economic reconstruction of the
Jewish communities in the war zones,
after the war is over, was postponed
from the tentative date previously
fixed, September 2 to November 18,
1917. The congress will be held at
Washington, D. C.
This decision was reached at a
meeting of the congress administra-
tive committee, of which Col. Harry
Cutler of Providence is chairman,
Saturday evening, July 7, at the of-
fices of the chairman of the execu-
tive committee, Mr. Nathan Straus, in
the form of a resolution introduced
by Judge Julian W. Mack of Chicago,
stating that in the interests of Amer-
ican affairs the date of the American
Jewish Congress be postponed. The
resolution is as follows:
"Resolved, that in view of the
urgency of public business at this
time the administrative committee
deems it wise and needful in inter-
est of American affairs that the Amer-
ican Jewish Congress be postponed
from September 2 to November 18,
1917."
Judge Mack's resolution was adopt-
ed pursuant to the statement that the
Rev. Dr. Stephen S. Wise of the Free
Synagogue, who is a member of the
administrative committee, had re-
cently been authorized by President

Wilson to issue with reference to the
American Jewish Congress. Dr. Wise
was present at the meeting and for-
mally presented the statement to the
effect that the president had ex-
pressed himself to be interested in
the Jewish Congress, and to be pur-
suaded that the American Jewish
Congress will be in accord with and
helpful to the aims and policies of
the American government, although
he indicated it may be necessary to
postpone the congress for some lit-
tle time, because of the urgency of
the public business.
Dr. Wise stated that out of defer-
ence to the public business at this
time, the congress should be post-
poned.
The previous date of September 2
had been fixed by the executive com-
mittee at its meeting of April 1, 1917.
However, the committee then fore-
saw that this might be an inopportune
time for the holding of the congress
and therefore empowered the admin-
istrative committee to change the
date of the congress in the following
resolution:
"That the administrative commit-
tee be empowered to summon the
congress on September 2, but that
the administrative committee by a
two-thirds vote of its members pres-
ent at a meeting specifically called
for that purpose, notice of which had
been sent to the members, shall be
empowered to postpone that date or
to anticipate it."

To give added impetus to the
progress of raising the building for
the Congregation "Beth Elijuhu," an
offer has been made by Elias Einzig,
a charter member of the congrega-
tion, that is unique in the raising of
funds for a new synagogue. The
name of the Congregation "Beth Eli-
juhu" was originally chosen in honor
of Mr. Einzig when the congregation
was organized in Detroit several
years ago. The name "Beth Elijuhu"
is an incorporation of Mr. Enizig's
first name, Elias, this honor being be-
stowed upon him because of his
faithful work in organizing the little
group.
The space of several years has wit-
nessed the growth of the congrega-
tion from a handful of members to
an organization of over 300 families.
The congregation having met in
rented rooms and halls are now build-
ing a beautiful synagogue at Beaubien
and Garfield streets at an approxi-
mate cost of $75,000.
The members of the congregation
and their friends are making heroic
efforts to raise this large sum of
money. Sensing a new field of rev-
enue, Mr. Einzig has offered to re-
linquish the honor of having his name
incorporated in that of the congrega-
tion, and desires that a new name be
selected for the new building, and
that the privilege of selecting the new
name be auctioned off to the highest
bidder,
This unique proceeding will take
place at an open meeting to be held
at Schreiber's hall, 500 Hastings
street.
