Makes Record for Per Capita Contributions in Michigan-Jos.
Gerson Donates $1,500-J. B. Simon
Pledges 20% of Total

In contributing over $4,500 to the
War Relief Fund, Lansing truly be-
comes the honor city of Michigan,
and probably of the entire country.
This amount, while comparatively
small, represents the offering of a
community of but 35 Jewish families

When the call for subscriptions
came, J. B. Simon pledged 20 per
cent of the total amount to be raised,
his contribution thus amounting to
$900. The largest donor was Joseph
Gerson, who contributed $1,500 and
$250 in the name of his children.

WIDOW OF DR. LEVY PRE-
SENTED WITH $30,000 HOME.
Mrs. J. Leonard Levy, widow of the
late lamented Rabbi of Pittsburgh, has
been presented with a $30,000 resi- •
deuce by a small group of friends of
the departed teacher. The gift had
been contemplated during the lifetime
of Dr. Levy as a loving tribute of un-
tarnished friendship by the group of
men to their great leader and his faith-
. ful helpmate. The home is located at
the corner of Beacon Street and Mur-
ray Avenue, in the beautiful Squirrel
Hill residential section of Pittsburgh.

and establishes a new record for per
capita contributions.
The "big mass meeting" at which
the above sum was donated was held
on Monday, June 25, at the Maccabee
hall. Every Jewish man, woman and
child in Lansing physically able to
attend was there. It was a small
crowd for the "flying squadron" from
Detroit, made, up of Adolph Finster-
wald, Rabbi Leo M. Franklin, Anton
Kaufman, and Milton Alexander.
• David A. Brown, general director of
the Michigan campaign, was sched-
uled to attend but was unexpectedly
detained in Detroit at the last mo-
ment. What the audience lacked in
size it made up for in intense en-
thusiasm, and the Detroit contingent
were well rewarded for their efforts.
The meeting was opened by J. B.
Simon, chairman, who is the presi-
dent of the local B'nai B'rith lodge.
Ile said that the Lansing Jewish'
community would "give more than its
share" as every other Michigan com-
munity had done. The speaker of the
evening was Rabbi Leo M. Franklin,
who stirred the audience with a
powerful recital of the purpose and
needs of Jewish war relief. He paid
tribute to the Jews in Lansing be-
cause, although the population was
too small to support a house of wor-
ship, they had not lost sight of the
fact that they were Jews.
Other speakers were Adolph Fin-
sterwald, Anton Kaufman, Milton
Alexander, and Henry Morris of Lan-
sing, who spoke as representing the
II'nai B'rith order of the city.

Most of the Jewish families in Lan-
sing are of the - Nvorking class and
this fact makes the total contribution
all the more remarkable and com-
mendable,
