The Most
Magnificent Thing
about the
American
Red Cross is

THAT wherever a nurse in white leans over a lonely cot in a great war-hospital of a foreign
land, and quiets with her gentleness some fevered cry—

THAT wherever an ambulance, groping through the gloom of the most terrible of all dark-
nesses, night at the front, ferries a shattered soldier through and delivers him safe at
the doorways of mercy—
THAT wherever a desolated village of once-fair France is stirred into life and hope again by the
sound of hammer and saw, the smell of food and the sight of courageous faces—

THAT wherever a Russian peasant home is gladdened with a gladness we have never known,
merely by the coming of a filled basket and a friendly voice—

THAT wherever the hunger-wail of a Belgian babe, the weak-voiced question of a Michigan
boy-soldier, the plea of a ragged schoolgirl, or the lifting of an empty sleeve, ape an-
swered by American hands bearing Am ?.rican bounty-

There—because we have generously given of our earn-
ings to the AMERICAN RED CROSS—we are playing
our part in diminishing the ruins and sorrows of War!

That is the most wonderful thing about the Red Cross.

It is worth many-fold every dollar pledged to its sup-
port.

Line up this week shoulder to shoulder with the Presi-
dent and the American Red Cross—for the sake of your
country, your state, your city, but, most of all, FOR
YOURSELF!

For the Red Cross is not a charity, but an investment
in self-respect, life-insurance for the American soldier,
safety-insurance for the Stars and Stripes. By financ-
ing the Red Cross of war-relief, we do the most that is
in our power to return to the nations of earth the
White Cross of Peace.

"Men who are willing to give their lives for the defense
of their country deserve to find the people they protect
prepared to care for the sick and wounded."
