Corn, Oats, Hay, Straw, Mill Feed - NECESSITY OF ENLARGEMENT IS URGED. Detroit's Growth Responsible for In- sufficient Housing Conditions. Detroit made an astounding leap from serenity and the fame of being the city beautiful to day and night hustle and an enormous output of its industries. It jumped so quickly and so far that the first thing anybody knew there was too much jostling, too little room to stretch. As indus- tries grow, so population increases, and with the influx of tens of thou- sands of people there must be homes. The central section having been built up and the outlying districts becom- ing so desirable that prices have soared beyond the reach of many, the only thing to do was to take in some of the surrounding land. So the farms of yesterday with one family to 40 acres or more soon will be changed and there will be from six to eight families to every acre, or something like 300 familiCs where one existed by the tilling of the soil. In taking in this land Detroit is showing the true safety first spirit. Better by far to have it in the city with the utilities that go with mu- nicipal operation than to force the new homeseekers to camp out, so to speak. The New Part of Detroit. The recently annexed territory starts at the northeast of the city and swings around to the northwest, going as far north as the Oakland county line. These are the 20 square miles of Greenfield and Hamtramck DETROIT GROWTH IS REAL • BOOM, SAY EXPERTS. Talk about room to fill the lungs with air and stretch the arms, this is sonic improvement on the cramped quarters of the greatest city of tliem all. No city has developed the speed that Detroit has in its growth, and the best part of it is that there has been nothing in the nature of what ordinarily is regarded as a boom. It has been a real boom, not inflation of the toy balloon type, for there is no puncturing here, no sharp report and quick collapse. Detroit is too firmly intrenched for anything of that sort. Sonic of the projects did not carry, but the land may be in the city be- fore the matter is settled. There is one tract which takes in some of Gratiot and Hamtramck townships. In the vote the Hamtramck part was in favor of annexation and it may, be taken into court on the proposition that this should be annexed inde- pendent of the desired strip • in Gratiot. The Springwells project, which also was lost, also is apt to be straightened out by the courts. It in- cluded parts of the territory that had been annexed at a previons election, the validity of which was questimied, so it was again submitted. If the previous vote is -held to have been legal the November vote will be non- effective as to the land comprised in the earlier proposal. 272-4 CLINTON ST.
