Albert Kahn Becomes Architect For
United States

Is Only Man Outside of War Department to Draw Plans for
Government Work—Has Charge of Gigantic Projects—
Picked Because of Prcminence in Erecting Largest
Industrial Plants in World

For the first time in its history the
War Department of the United States
has employed an architect who is not
connected with it in
i an official capacity.
This unusual and unprecedented honor
falls to Mr. Albert Kahn, the interna-
tionally recognized architect of Detroit.
who is one of our most distinguished
Jewish residents.
Mr. Kahn has drawn plans for a
series of aviation schools to cost ap-
proximately $1,000,000 each, the first
of which is now being erected at Mt.
Clemens. Mr. Kahn will supervise the
work of building nine such institutions
in various parts of the country, all
plans being standard. Large as the
school project is, it is small in compar-
ison to other government work which
Mr. Kahn is rushing to completion.
This is a plan calling for a complete
town on the Langley•field at Hampton,
Va. Millions will be spent on this
village which will be on the national
proving and testing grounds, and which
is designed to he a model not only for
the United States but for the world.
It is the first time there has been a
government undertaking of this nature.
The plans will be complete even to the
arrangement of shrubbery and will be
so drawn as to permit practically any
expansion. Mr. Kahn's entire force is
now working night and day on the
drawings and he cannot estimate how
many more men he will add to his
staff. Airplanes and seaplanes will be
tested on these grounds. Even a church
will be located on the property. The
government has purchased 1,700 acres
for the village which will have approxi-
mately 1,000 inhabitants at the start
and will be permanent.
Albert Kahn was picked as the man
to undertake this work from among
the nation's foremost architects because
of his fame as the builder of such model
plants as the Ford Motor Company,
Hudson, Chalmer, Lozier, Trussed Con-
crete Steel Co. and numerous other . in-
dustrial structures throughout the coun-
try. Mr. Kahn is also famous for the
beautiful buildings he has erected of
non-commercial character. He drew the
plans for the Temple Beth El in De-
