MILTON ALEXANDER AD-
DRESSES ONTARIO ADVER-
TISING ASSOCIATION.
Receives Ovation There for Publicity
Work Done By Him in Detroit
War Relief Campaign.
M num Alexander spoke Thursday
be fore the London ( Ontario) Adver-
tising association on the subject, "Whys
and Wherefores of Advertising."
The occasion was the annual ban-
quet of the association, and Mr. Alex-
ander went there representing the De-
troit Adcraft club.
"It remained for these times of stress
and strain," said Mr. Alexander, "to
bring to the noble art of advertising
the recognition which it has so richly
deserved. The great sister democracies
of the world in their hours of trial have
turned instinctively to advertising : and
even while their brave men struggle on
the battlefield, the potent pens of their
publishers are raising the armies and
raising the moneys and transcribing the
simple truths so that all eternity may
read.
"I believe that advertising will be
called upon increasingly to do the big
work of a busy world. I believe that
it can remove poverty, eliminate dis-
ease, eradicate prejudice, and spread
the light of truth and wisdom even
unto the four corners of the earth."
Mr. Alexander received a very compl-
mentary ovation when it was announc-
ed before the association that his pub-
licity work in the Detroit Jewish War
Relief Campaign was one of the main
factors contributing to its success.

NEW EMBROIDERY MEETS
WITH HIGH APPROVAL.
Women of Detroit are reported to
be fascinated with the originality, the
exactness, and the rare beauty in de-
sign which characterizes the new ma-
chine embroidery which is being ex-
ploited for the first time in Detroit,
by the Art Embroidery and Button
Company of 240 Woodward Avenue.
Wherever the work has been seen, it
has created the most favorable comment
—many being unable to differentiate be-
tween hand work and the work done by
these new imported machines.
Designs can be copied, adapted or
originated—in any shade or on any
material desired—and the results are so
strikingly beautiful that it is well
worth the few moments spent in a visit
to the new shop to view the hand-
some designs and samples. The public,
especially dressmakers and modistes, are
cordially invited to view this new em-
broidery, and are assured that their visit
will be appreciated, whether or not
they elect to make purchases.
Russian Commercial Schools Cannot
Do Without Jews.
Petrograd.—A petition signed by
all the directors of the government
schools of commerce, addressed to
the minister of finance, pleads for the
raising of the "per cent norm" applied
to Jewish students seeking admission
to these schools. The petition goes
on to explain that the non-Jewish
population takes no interest in these
schools, and since Jews are practic-
ally debarred from entry, the further
development of these institutes be-
comes impossible.
