The most important convention in
the history of the Zionist movement
will be held in Baltimore, beginning
lune 24th, by the American wing of
that body, unless it becomes neces-
sary to summon the 1,200 delegates to
that city at an even earlier date.
With a British army in Palestine,
marching 011 Jerusalem, with the ques-
tion of the establishment of a Jewish
state, one of the subjects discussed by
President Wilson and Arthur J. Bal-
four, Great Britain's special commis-
sioner to the United States, with all
of the Entente powers favoring the
project, and the strong probability
that because of the diplomatic break
between the United States and Turkey
the American government will shortly
issue a pronouncement in favor of a
Jewish republic, the Zionist organiz-
ations of America arc considering the
advisability of summoning the dele-
gates front practically every city in
the United States at an earlier date,
in order to gain time for the tremen-
dous task which the rapidly develop-
ing situation will impose upon it.
One of the most important things
to be considered by the convention
11. 111 be the calling of a world-con-
gress of the Zionist organizations of
the Entente countries—in the event
that following the capture of Jeru-
salem by General Archibald Mtirray's
army Great Britain should carry out
its intention, already semi-officially
announced, to give Palestine to the
Jews.
'flie organizations that will be rep-
resented at the Baltimore convention
will be the Provisional Zionist Com-
mittee, of which Justice Louis D.
Brandeis of the United States Su-
preme Court is the honorary chairman
and Rev. Dr. Stephen S. Wise acting
chairman; the Federation of Ameri-

Friedenwald of Baltimore is president
and which will send 400 delegates, rep-
resenting 200 societies; Hadassah,•the
women's branch of the Zionist move-
ment, of which Henrietta Szold of
New York is president, will send 125
delegates; Young Judea. the junior
branch of the movement, will be rep-
sented by 150 delegates; the Histad-
ruth - I vrith, the Hebrew - speaking
branch, 100 delegates; the Achooza
and Zion-Commonwealth, represent-
ing groups that have already acquired
land in Palestine for colonization pur-
poses, Nvill have 50 delegates; and the
Order Sons of Zion, the fraternal in-
surance branch of the movement, of
which Education Commissioner Jo-
seph Barondess of New York city is
the head, will send 200 delegates.
In addition to these organizations
which are directly identified with the
movement, delegates to the number
of fifty or more are expected from the
Order 13rith Sholom, of which Dr.
Louis Rubinsohn of Philadelphia is
grand master; the Independent Order
Sons of Israel, Harry Levinsohn of
Boston grand master, and the Federa-
tion of Galician, Roumanian, Polish
and Russian Jews, who have adopted
the Zionist platform, in addition to
several other organizations which
have fallen into line since it has be-
come manifest that the restoration of
Palestine to the Jews is an early pos-
sibility.
The international organization will
be represented by Dr. Shmarya Levin,
member of the first Russian Duma; .
Dr. Leo Motzkin of the Zionist Ac-
tion Committee and Dr. Ben Zion
Mossinsolm, director of the Jewish
high school in Jaffa, Palestine.
One of the projects that will come
before the convention will be the re-
organization of the movement which
has heretofore operated mainly along
the lines of agitation and propaganda
into a body whose main function shall
be the development of Palestine as
an autonomous Jewish territory in
which the Jewish people will be free
to develop their own national distinc-
tive culture.
