The Young People's society of

Sunday evening with a meeting at

Goldstone presiding.
After reports of standing commit-
tees had been read and accepted, Mil-
ton Alexander took the floor. As a

slogan this couplet:
"A David Brown

Mr. Brown spoke briefly, empha-
sizing the fact that a tentative pledge
of $1,000 had not been accepted be-

he urged that a far-reaching cam-
paign be made to assist the general
committee in its task of raising an
adequate fund for the relief of the
European War Sufferers.
In introducing David A. Brown,
chairman of the local campaign, Mr.
Alexander said: "You may not ap-
preciate how fortunate we are in De-
troit to have the services of such an
able executive to direct the destinies
of the campaign. But out of town
they appreciate what Mr. Brown is
doing. In fact, Jacob Bilikopf, the

"There is no reason why the Young
People's Society of Temple Beth El
shouldn't respond in a really big
way," said lie. "Few organizations

Dr. Franklin Condemns Social
"Slackers."
Dr. Leo M. Franklin, in addressing
the society, took occasion to register
an emphatic rebuke to those young
people who fail to aid charitable en-
terprises but spend their evenings and
their incomes on idle pastimes.
"I realize that the Young People's
Society has accomplished many
worth-while things," said the rabbi.
"Your 'Welcome-to-the-Stranger' was
a magnificent movement that brought
joy and friendship to hundreds who
would otherwise have been deprived
of that friendship. Your Wenley lec-
ture course was a real treat to the
city and its cultural forces. Your
outing to the children was a truly
worth-',,bile and noselfish undertak-
ing. But this is not enough!
"In these times no young man or
woman is justified in resorting to
down-town cabarets and dancing
halls. There is work to do—and we
cannot tolerate the slackers."
Large Sum Raised for Relief.
At the conclusion of Rabbi Frank-
lin's rousing speech the members
were asked to subscribe to the gen-
eral relief fund and in a few moments
a total of $1,379 was thus raised. Two
large general committees were also
appointed to carry on the work
among the Jewish young men and
women of the city.
The election resulted as follows:
President, Louis I. Frank; vice-presi-
dent, Aaron Kahane; recording sec-
retary, Lucille Zelenka; correspond-
ing secretary, Minni Goldschmidt;
treasurer, Milton Aronheim; directors,
