writers whose works he has pub-
lished. Mr. Knopf entered the pub-
lishing house of Doubleday, Page &
Co. to learn the publishing business,
and later joined the house of Mitchell
Kennerly. In 1915 he decided that
the field of foreign translations was
one that ought to be more extensive-
ly cultivated and he embarked on the
uncertain sea of book publishing on
his own account. That he has
achieved wonderful success is evi-
denced by the widespread demand
for Russian fiction on the part of the
reading public. In but two years he
has made his "Borzoi" books the
synonym for the best in contempo-
rary literature.
In the past year or so, Mr. Knopf
has been issuing a remarkable series
of translations of Russian fiction, in-
cluding works by Artzibasheff, Gogol,
Garshin, •Gorky, Andreyev, Lermen-
tov, Veresseyev and others. Having
W011 supremacy in the Russian field,
he has turned his attention to trans-
lat:ons of the German \ \Titers, and is
prenar.. ng English Versions of a
;c1-'es of Latin-American classics.
The success of these have led many
of tht, best American authors to bring
their latest and best books to him for
publication.
The young publisher has simply
et'lized his knowledge of literature as
p.cc,nired from individual study, and
!s giving expression to a belief that
the American people really Avant the
best there is in letters regardless of
their racial origin. Mr. Knopf has
performed a valuable service for book
lovers in America. He has opened
1p) new and wonderfully fertile fields
f rterary good things.

JEWISH REPUBLIC RESOLU-
..
TI ON IN CONGRESS.

Washington, D. C. Arthur Randle,

a local Gentile real estate broker, of-

fered his services to President Wilson
for the purpose of organizing an ex-
pedition to take Palestine from the
Turks. Randle enthusiasm for the
project was stimulated by recent re-
ports from Palestine, and his offer
followed as a result. Before the week
is out a resolution will have been in-
troduced in Congress favoring the
establishment of a Jewish Republic in
Palestine.

exerted tremendous influence on the
thought of all races. It is said by
critics that the Russians—Tolstoi,
Turgeniv and Dostoievsky—have al-
ready changed the direction of Eng-
lish fiction. Galsworthy Beresford
and Shaw, according to one student
of literature, have the Russian flavor
mixed curiously with their English
sap.
To one Jewish young man in New
York is due much of the credit for
introducing to the American public
the gems of Russian literature. He
is Alfred A.,Knopf, publisher of the
now famous "Borzoi" books. Mr.
Knopf is probably the youngest pub-
lisher in the country, being but 26
years of age. He is a graduate of the
arts department of Columbia univer-
sity, and has traveled extensively in
Europe where he met many of the
