The Jewish Woman

CRITICISES JEWISH GIRLS OF
LONDON FOR "BEAUTIFY-
ING" FACES.

A correspondont in the London
Jewish Chronicle is moved to words
over what he calls the question of
beautified Jewesses. He writes a let-
ter in the following strain: "Sir--•
Numbers of young Jewish women
take their walks about the West End
on such days as they are not at work
in the East End or West Central dis-
tricts. Unfortunately, some of them
render themselves unpleasantly no-
ticeable and ludicrous by covering
their faces with a layer of paint, pow-
der and rouge. A few merely whiten
their noses or give an unholy motive
hue to that organ, thereby making it
extraordinarily conspicuous. In either
case, the idea, one imagines, is to
beautify themselves. The exact op-
posite is the actual result. As they
cannot be mistaken for members of
that fast section of the upper ten,
which also bedaubs itself (though so
much more skillfully), they run the
greatest risk of being mistaken for
disreputable characters. They, there-
fore, do themselves and their race an
injustice by the practice.

Sunday, May 20th, is Flower Day
throughout the United States. Flow-
ers arc sold for the National Fund,
the proceeds of which go to alleviate
those in need in Palestine. Every cent
collected on Flower Day means so
much less needed for the War Relief.
The local committee fot' the Na-
tional Fund has laid out the city in
districts and will place volunteers in
each district. All volunteers are to
report promptly at 8 o'clock on Sun-
day morning at the Talmud Torah
Building, 47 Division street, between
Antoine and. Bcaubien, whence they
will be carried to their stations in
automobiles.
Every girl is needed. The more
girl volunteers the more will be the
gross proceeds. The need is urgent.
The Turkish government is treating
the Palestinean Jews today by massa-
cre and pillage as it treated the Ar-
menians last year. All that is asked
