FINE LEATHER

Remarkable Jewish Girl Engaged by Felix M. Warburg of
Kuhn, Leob & Co., as Adviser.

Tremendous vitality, alertness of
manner and a keen sense of humor
arc thecharacteristioi of this remark-
able young woman, Harriet B. Low-
enstein, of New York city. The rec-
ord of what she has accomplished
reads like the careers of half a dozen
successful women rolled into one.
Miss Lowenstein is a pioneer, so
far as women in New York are con-
cerned, in the field of accounting.
She is said to be the only WOIIICTI in
the United States who is both a law-
yer and a certified public accountant.
She is the first person, either man or
woman, who, in the state examination
for a license to practice as a certified
public accountant, received 100 per
cent in the subject of practical ac-
counting.
Miss Lowenstein is the first and
only woman to serve on the legal staff
of the Corporation Counsel in New
York city. She was assigned to the
Appeals Division, and remained in
that office four years. During that
time she compiled a three-volume di-
gest of the opinions of the Corpora-
tion Counsel.
When asked how the men on the
legal staff of the Corporation Coun-
sel regarded the innovation of hav-
ing a woman lawyer in the office,
Miss Lowenstein said: "They treated

me just the same as if I were a man.
No d:scrimination whatever was
evinced against me on account of my
sex. The. fact that I was a lawyer
and could do the work was appareptly
the only thing that counted."
In addition to this professional
work, Miss Lowenstein is engaged
by NI r. Felix M. Warburg, of the in-
ternational banking house of Kuhn,
Loeb & Co., as his adviser in philan-
thropic affairs, in which capacity she
has during the past four years been
instrumental to a large extent in or-
ganizing the work of the Jewish war
relief as well as in establishing a chain
of Young NI en's Hebrew and Kindred
Associations throughout the country
and the Federation for the Support
of Jewish Philanthropic InstitutiOnS
in Ncw York.
Miss Lowenstein is the comptroller
and auditor of both the National
Council of Young .Men's Hebrew and
Kindred Associations and of the local
Federation of Jewish Philanthropic
Institutions. She is interested and
active in other civic and communal
matters. She helped to organize the
Woman's City Club and the League
for Business Opportunities for
Women. She is a member of the
Civic Club, the Woman's City Club
and the Women's Lawyers' Associa-
tion.

"ARE WE TO WIN THE WAR

as long as it is not seditious nor treason-
able. There ought be no censorship of
the press and no censorship by the press.
Each is fatal to freedom."

UPON PRUSSIANISM BY
ADOPTING PRUSSIAN-
ISM?" ASKS DR. WISE.

Urging that the soul of America be
kept untarnished and that its high pur-
poses be maintained throughout the war,
Rabbi Stephen S. Wise decried the pro-
posed censorship feature of the Espion-
age bill. He called the question of cen-
sorship a very grave one, and said
"A people does not rule if it cannot
express itself with freedom. Infinitely
better some blunders of the press than
the stifling of public opinion. A people
which is not free to express itself has
ceased to be free to rule itself. Are we
to win the war upon Prussianism by
adopting the Prussian method?
"The press serves the nation 'by pro-
testing against any infringement of its
liberties in the guise of an intolerable
censorship. I would have the newspa-
pers of the country equally , . jealous, as.
alas! they have not always been to safe-
guard every expression of public opinion
