Nathan Straus Advises Rich "Slackers" Should be Ostracized
and Shamed For Not Giving---Jews in Russia
Will Become Industrial Powers,
says Judge Rosalasky.

New York—A quarter of a million
dollars was raised for Jewish war suf-
ferers last night at the Hippodrome,
where Josef Rosenblatt, the Russi'bin
Cantor, gave his first concert in New
York under the auspices of the Central
Committee for the Relief of Jews Suf-
fering Through the War. Most of the
money came in small amounts, in pledges
made by nearly every one of the 5,000
persons who filled the Hippodrome from
stage to roof. The floodgates of gen-
erosity were opened after an impassioned
address by Justice Otto A. Rosalsky and
an earliest appeal by Nathan Straus.
Cantor Rosenblatt is making a propa-
ganda tour that is to include thirty
American cities. The committee is try-
ing to raise a large part of the $10,000,-
000 sought this year for the relief of
Jews in the warring countries of Europe.
Mr. Straus was welcomed with ap-
plause as he walked to the front of the
stage to introduce the speakers. He
scored rich persons who out of their
abundance did not give to succor the dis-
tressed.
"Get a list of those who give, but get
also a list of those who do not give,"
he said. "Make a list that you can put
up, talk about, and tell your friends
about. Nothing makes men loosen up
their purses so much as ostracism. You
will shame every rich man into giving
if you talk enough against him."
At another stage of the meeting Mr.
Straus said he had given up his horses
and yacht because he could not enjoy
