Rebecca Lucas by birth and mar-
riage properly occupies a prominent
place in Jewish affairs. Daughter of
a distinguished line of Sephardic not-
ables, she is the sixth lineal descend-
ant of the famous Hallam David
Nieto, who was the chief rabbi of the
Spanish and Portuguese community
in England. He came from Leghorn,
Italy, in 1701, to preside over the Jews
of England, then nearly all Seph-
ardim. He was born in Venice in
1654. His son, Isaac, succeeded him
in his high office. The Jewish calen-
dar now in use throughout the world
;Ind the time for fixing the Sabbath
was first tabulated by these great
men. The father of the subject of
these notes is Rev. A. H. Nicto, who
has occupied many important posi-
tions in the Sephardic community. He
was rabbi in Kingston, Jamaica, Brit-
ish West Indies, from 1869 to 1882,
and in New York in the Congregation
Shearith Israel. His son, the brother
of the subject of this sketch, is Rabbi
facob Nicto, of Congregation Shear-
ith Israel, San Francisco, Cal. On
her mother's side, Mrs. Lucas comes
from the noted Belasco family. The
present generation knows David Be-
lasco, the famous playwright. There
have also been many artists and ac-
tors, including some now prominent
among the Californian histrionic stars.
In 1890 she married Albert Lucas,
whose name has been identified with
every religious and philanthropic
Jewish cause in America during the
last quarter of a century. The break-
ing out of the present European war
found Mr. Lucas his last, and what
will be perhaps his greatest oppor-
tunity to serve his people. He, in

PRESBYTERIAN PASTOR HAILS
RETURN OF JEWS TO
PALESTINE.

NEW YORK.-The Rev. Edward A.
Neigwin, in a sermon at the West End
Presbyterian church at Amsterdam Ave-
nue and 105th Street last night, hailed
the fulfillment of Abraham's prophecy
that the Jews would return to Palestine.
The presence of the British armies in
Jerusalem, according to the minister,
marked the downfall of Mohammedan
power and promised the restoration of
the Holy Land to the Jews, and he be-
lieved that England was prepared to
consider the advisability of establishing
a Jewish republic in Palestine tinder the
protection of the United States.

conjunction with Mr. Nlorris Engel-
man, was the first to summon the Jews
of America to the assistance of their
suffering brethren in the war zones
by his telegrams to the synagogues
throughout the country calling for
collections to be made on Yom Kip-
pur, September 30, 1914. From this
to the organization of the Women's
Proclamation Committee, the Nation-
al Jewish Women's Organization for
War Relief, of which Mrs. Lucas is
the executive secretary, is but a step.
During the whole two and a half
years that have passed, Mrs. Lucas
has devoted the whole of her time,
not only to devising ways and means
of raising money for her suffering sis-
ters and their little ones, but she has
also been prominent in the Belgian
relief work and has been besides an
ardent propagandist of the doctrine
of "preparedness" for our own coun-
try. She was in line in the Roosevelt
Brigade that startled New York when
50,000 women marched through its
streets calling upon the youth of
America to get ready to defend our
national rights and our national honor,
if and wherever they might be .as-
sailed.
Throughout the whole of her st eren-
nous life, the position of which per-
haps she is proudest, is that she 'has
•carved from the hundreds of chil-
dren, who during the last twenty years
have come under the influence of her-
self and her husband in the religious
schools he established in the heart of
the Ghetto of New York. Without
children of her own, it is impossible to
count the young mothers whose great-
est joy it is to place their babies into
the arms of "Aunt Lucas."
