That Is What Our Busin.-st. Is Based On

MISS MABEL HUTZLER
Executive Secretary, Jewish Children's Bureau, Baltimore, Md.

THE JEWISH PRISONER.

In the Russian Prisoners-Camp behind
Irkutsk, Christmas night was becoming-
ly celebrated, and the commandant, Ivan
Ivanowitch, was distributing the pres-
ents which had been received by differ-
ent prisoners, calling each one by name
before handing him over his parcel.
"Moses Nathansohn," the cossack
: veiled out, and a frail little Jew hail-
mg from Galicia appeared. The com-
mandant handed him a square looking
parcel. The Jew was all aglow as he
tremblingly took the parcel and com-
menced to undo it. The parcel had been
well packed for the Siberian journey,
and it was some time before all the
outer wrappings were removed. Finally,
the Jew produced a blank volume, gold-
edged, with some large Hebrew letter-
ing on one of the covers. It was noth-
ing less than a "Sidur."
He had written home that he wanted
his Sidur. Here he was going through
all the agonies attendant upon hunger
and frost, he could well have done with
his warm overcoat which remained be-
hind at Tarnov, but disregarding the
weather which had almost reached zero,
lie wanted his "Sidur."
He settled down in a corner, obliv-
ious to all that was going on around
him, deaf to the shouts of the com-
mandant. Later another Galician Jew
joined him, and the happy possessor of
the "Sidur" said to him. "what can I
do here if not pray, it is the one thing
they cannot forbid me, because they
don't understand it."
