Jewish Young Men Make Notable Suc-
cess in Floral Business

I

Manufacture of Cigars Unhampered
By U-Boat Campaign

Probably no article in constant daily
use has been more seriously affected by
the submarine warfare of Germany than
cigars.
This country has for years been de-
pendent upon Holland for its supply of
Sumatra wrapper tobacco which is the
type of leaf used on the outside of the
better grade of smokes. About 30,000
hales are consumed annually in the
United States, the tobacco being sold at
public sale or inscription in Holland.
These sales occur in the fall and spring
of each year but the hulk of this year's
supply is practically tied up now in Hol-
land, and because of the U-boats cannot

be brought over here until the present
situation changes very materially.
n-
In this connection, Mr. Schwart
R. G.
ufacturer of the well-kno
DUN" 10-cent cigar, is pleased to advise
that he has an ample quantity of import-
ed Sumatra on hand and that, therefore,
the quality of his cigar will be strictly
maintained and the smokers of this pop-
ular brand will be taken care of in spite
of these unfavorable conditions.
Mr. Schwartz is to be congratulated
for his foresight in laying in a large
amount of old tobacco and thus being
able to protect his steadily growing bus-
iness.

HYMAN ATLAS

BENJAMIN FREIDMAN

It is only about four years agcl that
Hyman Atlas and Benjamin Freid-
man cast their lot together and or-
ganized the Atlas Floral Company.
Their ardor undampened by the high
rental demanded for a down-town lo-
cation, the two partners, still in their
early 20's, located themselves in the
very heart of the city, next door to
the Detroit Opera House.
With typical Jewish thrift they re-
alized that it was better to have a
small store in a good location than
to have a more roomy shop where the
crowds were less dense and less eager
to buy.
From that first little shop they took
the larger shop next door, and this
year took over the large 'store that
had been occupied by Klagge &
Klagge, at 37 Grand River avenue
east.
Pursuing a rather new policy in the
sentimental line of flower-selling,

these two boys began to apply to the
floral business the same energy and
merchandising ability that have
served to make ventures in more ma-
terial lines successful. Men in this
business, as a rule, are growers or
horticulturists.
Atlas and Freidman decided to ap-
ply the more artistic and effective
'principles of the business man and the
artist. The business has grown to
be one of the largest of its kind in
Detroit, with two down-town stores,
and a complete delivery system, Mr.
Atlas being in charge of the financial
end of the business.
Mr. Freidman has devoted his time
and talents to the practical end of
the business, being in personal charge
of the execution of all orders. His
original and striking productions
have caused his firm to develop an
unusually large and profitable busi-
ness in superintending the decorative
schemes for functions, openings, etc.
It is a source of pride to the Jew-
ish community of Detroit that the
city's prosperity has brought fortune
and success in its wake for many of
its young men..

ZEDEK GYM SUNDAY NIGHT.

Wear Diamonds"

Griswold St. get. rifbetwThseater

The Young People's Auxiliary So-
ciety of the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue
will close the social season with a
play and dance at the gymnasium of
the synagogue on Sunday, April 22.
The play will begin at 8:15 p. m. It is
called "Box and Cox," and is a farce
comedy, consisting of the following
characters: Box, Cox and Mrs.
Bouncer. The names of the actors
who will perform in these mysterious
parts are a secret the divulgence of
which will furnish as much amuse-
ment as the show itself. The play is
announced as a howling scream, rich
comedy, replete in action. The en-
tertainers are of home talent, and are
purported to be the best in town.
The aforesaid play, however, is mere-
ly incidental to the glorious dance
that will react by way of contrast to
produce salutory and other effects on
those, everyone of whom shall expend
the sum of a half a dollar to engage
in the participation of the greatest
treat of an animated young life.

"The Pianola
is Perfection"

Paderewslti— greatest of all
pianists, thus expresses his
opinion of the celebrated
"PIANOLA" Player-Piano.

It so far surpasses all other Player-Pianos in true,
musicianly playing that it is the ONLY ONE receiving
the endorsement of the foremost musical authorities.
And, this same vast musical superiority and high

standing makes the
"Pianola" the player
that will bring far
greater pleasure and
satisfaction to your
home than any other.
