Nothing could be more absurd than such 'a plea, for at all times, whether at the pin- nacle of plenty or at the very plinth of poverty, the Jew, like Isaac of old has built his altar, called upon the name of the Lord, and pitched his tent wherever he sojourned. The Jew is opposed to conversion because he believes that not precept but example, and not belief but life, are the tests of a moral life. The Jew could never possibly think of forcing his creed upon anyone, for he feels that with God, charac- ter counts for more than creed, and conduct is of higher value than dog- ma. (Special Correspondence) NEW YORK, April 9.—Arnbassador Gerard, who spoke for a few minutes yesterday at a fair and concert in the Star Casino, at 107th street, to raise $5,- 000 for Jewish war sufferers at War- saw, said he had made arrangements before leaving Switzerland for contin- uation of the transtrission of funds to Jewish victims of the war in Poland. - "Do not fear that the entrance of the United States in the war will prevent your aid from reaching the people for whom it is intended," Mr. Gerard told the members and friends of the United Warschauer Relief Society. The funds hereafter will be distribtited through C. L. Marcus, from Berne, Switzerland. Mr. Marcus, who is a New York banker, had been in Germany and Poland on this work for some months before the Ambassador left Berlin. It was through the presentation of condi- tions to the Ambassador by Mr. Marcus that Mr. Gerard undertook the work of aiding the Warsaw Orphan Asylum and Home for the Aged by obtaining finan- cial support from the Rockefeller Foun- dation, which is now contributing $1,200 monthly. The American Jewish Relief, the Cen- tral Committee for the Relief of Jews Suffering Through . the War, and the Jewish People's Relief will meet town- row afternoon to decide what effect the entrance of the United States into the war is to have on the activities of the Organizations in the territory occupied by the Germans.
