THE JEWISH CHRONICLE

ALLEGED COPY OF REM-
BRANDT SOLD FOR
1,250,000 MARKS.

Copenhagen.—For

a number of
years European art critics have found
it impossible to agree as to which of
two copies of Rembrandt's master-
piece portraying "a Jewish spectacled
old woman with a Bible on her lap"
is the original. The one copy is in
the possession of the well known art
collector Jules Farge of Paris while
the second is owned by the Warsaw
antique dealer, Saphiheha.
Some three years ago both owners
of these copies, each of whom claimed
to possess the original masterpiece,
met at Berlin and submitted their
pictures to a special council of Euro-
pean art critics. The majority of these
recognized as authorities in the Dutch
schools of painting decided that the
Warsaw copy was the work of the
master.

A large syndicate is being organ-
ized to handle downtown property,
build industrii'll plants and construct
•large modern apartment houses in
well selected central locations. This
syndicate will be called the Central
Real Estate Syndicate, and is backed
by some of the most prominent real
estate men in the country.
The syndicate plan is not an ex-;
periment as it has been successfully
operated in many large cities. In fact,
some syndicates have been formed
heretofore in Detroit, but generally
these syndicates consisted of only
well-to-do members. Under the plan
of the Central Real Estate Syndicate
the man of small means also will
have an opportunity to become a mem-
ber and participate in the kind of
profits which heretofore have been
available only to the man of large
means.
The syndicate will be managed by
men of wide experience. John F.
Wallace, president, is also president
of John F. Wallace Company of
Chicago. He is former president of
the Chicago Real Estate Board and

one of Chicago's largest real estate
operators. He is at present on the
advisory committee of the Chicago
Real Estate Board.
Gilbert F. Woods, vice president, is
an appraisal expert, whose clients in-
Chicago
elude Morris and.
City Railways, Shepherd & Guild, Ed-
inburg, Scotland; Lord Admiral Beres-
ford, London, Englan'd, and many
other well-known 'men and institu-
tions.
Thomas E. IloSkins, treasurer and
general manager, was former man-
ager of the Bartlett Million Dollar
Syndicate, of Chicago, a very suc-
cessful syndicate, one of the members
of which was Mayor Thompson of
Chicago.
Connected with the syndicate is the
0. W. Rosenthal Compaty, general
contractors, and among the largest
contracting concerns in the country.
They are now building the Pennsyl-
vania freight terminalg In Chicago;
also the City Hospital at Jackson,
Michigan. These contractors will do
building for the syndicate. •
The plan has been endorsed by
many _prominent Detroit people, and a
large amount, it is said, has already
been subscribed.

GIRL STARS PREDOMINATE
PROGRAM AT FOREST.

The Forest theater is becoming the
real social center in the vicinity of
Crosstown and Woodward avenue.
The programs at this community play-
house represent the very high class
motion picture productions which is
the reason for the capacity houses
every evening,. Beginning the week
of April 1, Mary Minter will
delight a crowded house in "Dulcies
Adventure." This diminutive star
will be followed by a prototype in the
form of the famous Mary Pickford in
a triumph of versatility, "Poor Little
Pepina." Bessie Love continues the
series of movie darlings in a fairy
story of modern times, "Nina, the
Flower Girl," on Tuesday. E. II.
Sothern, the world's greatest actor,
appears in the "Man of Mystery" on
Wednesday and he is followed by one
of the later day stars, William Des-
mond, in a unique aqd absorbing play,
"The Iced Bullet." Ethel Clayton fol-
lows these two male stars in a story
of pure ambition, "The Web of De-
sire," and on Saturday Fannie Ward
completes a very exceptional pro-
gram in a drama of spooks, "Witch-
craft." Charlie Chaplin also appears.
The added features include Mrs.
Vernon Castle, Bushman and Bayne
and a selection of delightful come-
dies. The musical program at each
performance has elicited much favor-
able comment.
