THE JEWISH CHRONICLE 6 Our Jewish Congressmen Hon. Julius Kahn, a Republican Leader (Special Correspondence.) NOTE—This is the first of a series of articles dealing with the lives and activities of Jewish members of Congress. Washington.—Foremost among the Jewish legislators to occupy a scat in the sixty-fifth congress is Representa- tive Julius Kahn of the Fourth Con• gressional District of California. This district, located in the city of San Francisco, embraces five assembly dis- tricts, in which the number of Jewish voters is comparatively small. At the last election, the number of ballots cast for Mr. Kahn exceeded the total number of Jews resident in San Fran- cisco. Obviously enough, Congress- man Kahn is not sent to Washington through the Jewish vote he is able to muster. This, however, does not im- ply that Congressman Kahn is not in the best sense a Jewish representa- tive. On the contrary, as Jews, we have in the representative from San Francisco a most valiant champion, one on whom we may rely in all in- stances where Jewish interests are at stake. On the one hand there are a number of men who by virtue of their political position and stateman-like qualifications are leaders politiCally and socially. These men are wel- comed in ministerial offices and lobby gatherings and sought after on ball floors and in drawing rooms. On the other hand there are a great number of political nonenities, many of whom the "shining lights" in their own locali- ties, and coming here full of designs for storming the capital, find them- selves doomed to bitter disappoint- ment. Politically, these men are but the pawns of the different party and state leaders, while socially they find no place among the elite.
