THE JEWISH CHRONICLE. 10 What Detroit Rabbis Say About the Effect of Emanci- pation of Russian Jews RABBI A. M. HERSHMAN Replying to the query as to what effect the liberation of Russian Jewry will have on the Kionist movement, it is my opinion that the emancipa- tion of Russian Jewry will strengthen the Zionist movement and give it greater impetus.. Let us disabuse our minds of an idea which has taken deep root in sonic quarters—the idea that the ex- istance and growth of Zionism are indissolubly bound up with the exist- ance and continuance of non-Jewish agitation and that the admission of all Jews to equal rights will render Zionism unnecessary. No doubt, the Zionist organization counts some ad- herents who are Zionists by compul- Give Your Strength to the Jewish People to win the Jewish Goal ! City Chron. sion and not by conviction; who will tell you that the raison d'etre of Zion- ism is the anomalous and unenviable position which the Jews occupy in such countries as Russia and Rou-: mania. The rank and file of Zion- ists, however, have joined the mdve- ment not for hysterical but for his- torical reasons. They are deeply moved by the misery of their people; but Zionism means to them some- thing more—infinitely more than a solution of economic and political problems. It is a spiritual movement, a lofty ideal. Russian Jewry, groaning under the yoke of Pharaonic tyranny, has. ren- dered invaluble service to the cause of Zionism. Russian Jewry free from all political disabilities and restric- tions will be in a position to take up the work of the liberating of the Jew- ish soul-with renewed vigor and fresh energy. RABBI JUDAH P. LEVIN The sudden and miraculous appear- ance of freedom in Russia through the overthrow of Czar Nicholas' gov- ernment is an event of great signifi- cance for the world at large. It will have a tremendous influence in stimu- lating the movement towards emanci- pation in those lands which are still backward and thus advance world civilization. The news is especially happy for our brethren in Russia. There can be no doubt that wherever the people in fact rule, the Jews receive equal civil and political rights. We may hope that this change towards demo- cratic rule in Russia will also facili- tate the fulfillment of the Zionist aims in Palestine. But in the moment of our supreme joy let us not forget that the Jews in Russia are still in great distress and need our continual aid and succor. We must now more than ever increase our efforts to alleviate the unfortu- nate condition of our Brethren in Europe. HENRY MORGENTHAU LEADS JEWISH RELIEF WORK IN UNITED STATES. National Campaign Started to Raise $10,000,000 for Relief in Eastern War Zone. . Henry Morgenthau of the Ameri- can Jewish relief commission an- nounced today $10,000,000 must be raised in the United States by June 1, if the 3,000,000 Jews in the eastern war zone are to be saved from star- vation. Mass meetings are to be held in the principal cities in every state and prominent Jews will make coast to coast trips to speak. Wealthy men will be asked to give amounts equal to thOse which given committees may raise or to make large subscriptions conditional upon collection of a certain amount. The Russian revolution is expected to furnish impetus to the campaign and it was announced the state de- partment had given assurance Ameri- can diplomats would carry on work of feeding Jewish non-combatants, Men associated with Mr. Morgen- thau in the movement include Jacob Schiff, United States Supreme Court Justice Louis D. Brendeis, Daniel Guggenheim, Nathan Straus and Her- bert H. Lehman. to individual ideas of drapery and up- holstering. Charles H. Bagg, proprietor of the shop, is a mart of wide experience in JUDGE GEORGE S. HOSMER. Judge Homier has occupied the po- sition of Circuit Judge of Wayne County since he was first elected to that position in the spring of . 1887— thirty years of continuous service on • the bench—a record that he may well be proud of. Judge '-losmer was born in Detroit in 1855 and was educated in-Alm-pub- lic schools. He attended the Univer- sity of Michigan and graduated from the law department in 1875. He was admitted to the bar in 1878. When he was 32 years old the electors of Wayne County chose him for the im- portant position of Circuit Judge— certainly a great honor for so young a lawyer; and to show their apprecia- tion of his sound judgment and abil- ity, they have voted to return him to that position at every judicial election since that bent. He is not only a great favorite with the laymen, but also with his brother lawyers, he hav- ing received the largest vote in the recent lawyers' primary for renomin- ation for Circuit Judge. his field. He was formerly buyer for the Elliot, Taylor, Woolfenden de- partment store and is preeminently equipped to be of service to patrons of the most exacting taste. Mr. Bagg has developed a host of friends in Detroit and his success is practically assured. • Nut Uttu of mart April io 111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111 MINIM FELDMAN'S Cut Rate LIQUOR HOUSE 575 St. Antoine, corner Watson CADILLAC 4385 With a complete stock of Imported and Domestic WINES, COGNACS, SLIVOVITZ and BRANDIES for Pesach at attractive prices.
