at luncheon on Monday for the benefit
of the Hadassah Medical Unit.
A program, unusually interesting,
Nvas presented to the members of the
Jewish Woman's Club at its meeting
Sunday, March 4, at Temple Beth El.
In harmony with the literary num-
ber of the program, which pertained
to Germany, Mrs. Frederick Fitzger-
ald, contralto, selected a group of
German songs, which she rendered in
a most delightful and pleasing man-
ner. She was ably assisted at the
piano by Miss Margaret Mannebach.
The subject of the literary program
was "Schiller—His Message to the
Present Generation," by the eminent
scholar, Max Winkler, professor of
the German languages and literature
at the University of Michigan.
Mr. Winkler says that Schiller
stands out as a great character, and
the most revered poet of humanity.
He was regarded by the people as a
poet of freedom; yet he was an
avowed opponent of the French Revo-
lution and in 1859 he wrote a pam-
phlet defending Louis XVI, but it was
never published. According to him,
"liberty," with its two qualities, polit-
ical and social, must emanate front -
the individual:
At the conclusion of the program,
Mrs. Frederick Fitzgerald sang two
German songs:
