Of particular interest to the Jewish
community of Detroit is the candi-
dacy of Harry B. Keidan, for the of-
fice of associate judge of the record-
er's court. Mr. Keidan is the only
Jewish candidate in the spring elec-
tions. He is at present assistant
prosecutor of the county, having held
that position for the past five years.
Mr. Keidan has been identified with
many Jewish activities in the city. He
is a trustee of the Shaarey Zedek con-
gregation, president of the Men's
Club of the same institution and has
Served on the Jewish war relief com-
mittee and other bodies for the ad-
vancement of Jewish interests.
Has Made Record as Prosecutor.
As a lawyer and official of the state,
Mr. Keidan has becoMe known as an
expert in the field of criminal juris-
prudence and psychology. His wide
experience in the handling of human
delinquencies make him a fit candidate
for judge in the recorder's court. He
has earned the public commendation
in his unrelcntless prosecution of loan
sharks, quack physicians and pander-
ers.
Among his important legal achieve-
ments is the case of Mrs. Caroline
Becker, against whom Mr. Keidan
succeeded in obtaining a first degree
verdict of murder, with a sentence
for life. This is the only verdict of
the sort against a woman since the
famous case of Mrs. Nellie Pope. An-
other important case was the convic-
tion of the notorious Drs. K. & K.
New York.—A conference of Galic-
ian Jews called by the Austrian-Hun-
garian Zionists was attended by some
eighty delegates and was in session
Saturday evening and throughout
Sunday.
It was decided that the forthcoming
American Jewish Congress be called
upon to take up the questions of
Galician rights and constructive re-
lief, and that the Jewish Congress
shall remain a permanent institution
and to create a "national house" for
the local Galician quarter, which
should embrace all the general activ-
ities of Galician Jews.
The conference opened with a mass
meeting on Saturday night, at which
Dr. Schmarya Levin and Yoel Entin
were the chief speakers. At Sunday
morning's session Dr. S. M, Melamed,
editor of the American Jewish Chron-
icle, spoke at considerable length over
the peculiar position of Jews in Ga-
licia.
The Federation of Galician Jews of
America did not participate in this
conference.
