Lipman Levy

Among the modest but efficient workers in the cause of Ameri-
can Israel during the past two score years, none deserves more grate 7
ful recognition and sincere appreciation than Mr. Lipman. of
Cincinnati, who celebrates today the eightieth anniversary . of his
birth. To his painstaking, and efficient work the Union of American
Hebrew Congregations, of which he has been secretary since its incep-
tion, is greatly indebted. His work in this important .office has never
been perfunctory in character. Though occupying an eminent and
enviable place at the Ohio bar, he has always considered the affairs
of the Union of paramount importance, and where choice had to be
made between service to American Israel and care for his personal
interests, Mr. Levy could always be depended upon to put his own
affairs aside. To his great conscientiousness was added signal ability
and the Union of American Hebrew Congregations has been fortunate
indeed in having the benefit of his direction' and counsel at critical
pericds in its history.

Though having reached the ripe age of four score years, Mr. Levy
k still alert, active, and young in spirit and 'we join his hosts of
admiring friends in praying for him a continuance of mental and
physical vigor, as the Rabbis say "ad meoh shono." American Israel
rejoices with this faithful servant of God and of man.

The rule of every self-respecting Jew should be to have no dealin!

practically in every so-called leading social organization in the
average American city which takes it upon itself to do the enter

A'Great State Waits

• It is with considerable interest that we learn of another "adjourn-

ment" of the Shapiro case on the part of the Common Council of the

Village of Highland Park. Once more the hearing on the charges pre-

ferred against the - Police Department have been deferred by that body- -

for reasons unknown! This time the date fixed is Tuesday, August

That the Council does consider the matter at that time, every just

and liberty loving American most ardently desires and has a right to ex-
pect! The distinguishing characteristic between greatness and smallness

among men is that great men, be they great for good or evil, face the

problems confront theni squarely and unflinchingly, having confi-

dence in themselves and their judgment. Little men falter and evade

disagreeable duties, shiiking responsibility, preferring. procrastination.

This is caused by a fear, a dread that the decision reached or action taken

may be incorrect. They do not trust themselves.

We hope the previous postponements of the Shapiro case were un-

avoidable and that at its next meeting the Council will dispose of this

important matter, realizing that as the greatest village of Michigan, the

eyes of a commonwealth are turning slowly but surely upon them. The
peOPle- 6f - thiS- State, Jew and Gentile alike, wish to be authoritatively ad-

vised whether Highland Park is an AM ERICAN village or whether by

some freak of nature, it is that political monstrosity--a bureaucratic city
in a democratic state. S. S. G.

Commenting upon the action of Rabbi Leo M. Franklin and
Fred M. Butzel of this city in refusing to accept an invitation to
dine with President Wilson at the Detroit Athletic Club on account
of. the anti-Semitic policy of the latter in refusing to adroit Jews
to membership, the•Sentinel of Chicago, under the title "Fighting
Back," pays them the following splendid trilvte:
"Rabbi Leo M. Franklin and Mr. Fred M. Dutzel of Detroit
R.cently gave an exhibition of Jewish self-respect that is worthy of
notice. The occasion was the recent appearance of President
Wilson in Detroit, when he addressed the salesmen's convention.
A dinner was tendered the President at the Detroit Athletic Club
and prominent business and professional leaders of the community
were invited, among them Rabbi Franklin and Mr. Butzel. Both,
• be it said to their lasting credit, did not hesitate for a moment.
They would not think of attending an affair at the Detroit Athletic
Club which refuses to admit Jews to membership even if it was
given in honor of the President of the United States. Others in a
similar' situation might have compromised with their consciences
and their sense of loyalty to their people. They might have been
present because of an uncontrollable desire to hear the President at
any cost or to avoid being singled out as having failed to show the
proper respect for the Chief Magistrate of the Nation. Still others
might have thought only of the distinction conferred upon them
and enjoyed it more perhaps because they had been singled out for
favor. None of these considerations carried weight with either
Rabbi Franklin or Mr. Butzel. Their fine spirit of solidarity and

determine at the very beginning of the season to do his or her full

share in the work sponsored by synagog, school and philanthropy.

To live for oneself alone is to degrade oneself to the lovel of a brute.

As men, let us rise to the heights of humanity.

The refusal of the Russian authorities to permit Dr. Magnes,

chairman of the committee to aid relief measures for suffering Jews,

to enter Russia is in no way surprising. The leopard cannot change

his spots at will. Russia has fallen so far into a state of national

degradation that even the companionship of England cannot make

her decent. Alas, some fear that like the rotten apple in the barrel,

she may taint those who companion themselves with her.

It is gratifying that at least a few of our great national organiza-

tions like the B'nai B'rith and the Rabinnical Conference have left

no stone. unturned to bring peace in the unfortunate congress-con-

ference muddle. Organizations that have no personal axes to grind

can take only one attitude—and that is, that greater than the interests

of any party in Jewry is the need of securing safety and equal rights to

the Jews of the whole world. Self-serving at this time may mean
the ultimate sacrifice of all Israel's safety.
