that aims to meet adequately and
in an intelligent 111;11111(.1 - , the de-
mands of growth and progress.

To illustrate, let me begin by
stating that I rode today along the
four sides of an immense square--
a square that embraces, in one part,
the main business district of the
city. It embraces, likewise, beauti-
ful residence sections. It includes,
also, ,enormous industrial districts.
It is a square that encloses fifteen
square miles of Detroit. Along three
sides of that square, and for half
the distance of the fourth side, I
rode along wide, smooth boulevards
—a continuous stretch of boulevard.
'Ile remaining half of the fourth
side I mention separately, because
it is not strictly a boulevard, al-
though it is a wide, paved thorough-
fare. The main difference is that
it has street car tracks running over
it.
As I rode along this stretch of
boulevard, it was, for the g - reater
part, like going along a park drive-
way. Frequently it spread into two
driveways along either side of pic-
turesque parkways. It cut through

numerous open squares, and tri-
angles, and playground spaces. It
was lined, almost continuously,
with trees.
To walk through I)etroit's main
business district is to pass one park-
way and public square after
another. At almost every street in-
tersection there is a triangle or an
open space, picturesque with trees,
flower
flow pots
til d lawns. Just a block
away from the main street, and in
the heart of this district, there is
Washington boulevard, four blocks
in length—four blocks of double
driveway and four blocks of park-
way, fitted out with trees, water
pools and benches.
There are various parkways and
squares too numerous to mention.
Detroit is not without tall office
structures and huge business blocks.
They are present in great numbers
in the very locality I am describing.
It is the more remarkable that De-
troit, now in its march of growth
and progress, has such a foundation
upon which to build itself.

Radial Streets Trade Arteries.

It is from this central locality,
also, that spread three great radial
thoroughfares—two to the north-
west, and the third to northeast.
They are wide, paved thorough-
fares, stretching each from this
central area to the limits of the city.
They are arteries which, in the De-

invaluable.
The streets and boulevards 1 have

remarkable groundwork of Detroit.
There are other wide thoroughfares
which enter into it. I do not mean
