applied to the merits of Stevens

They are without doubt the best

We have the bald facts as to brick

Detroit's Street System and
Building Development Is the

Marvel and Envy of the
Country.
---
Charles IItlfi special writer for
the St. Louis Star, deHares that this

,

city has the foundation of a marve-
lous growth in its street and boule-
vard system.
growth has come to Detroit with
a bound. Each day is bringing an
increase in that growth. It is
growth in industry, growth in busi-
ness, growth in population. Today,
the population figure stands near
the $00,000 mark. Thus, Detroit
stands alongside Cleveland as
threatening seriously the claim of
St. Louis to fourth place among
American cities.
Detroit seems possessed with a
determination to drive forward.
The people of the city are boosters,
virtually to the last individual. No
visitor comes to Detroit without
cooling into contact with an evi-
dence of that spirit. The city today
feels that it is only in the making.
The people are enthusiastic in lend-
ing themselves to that process.
They are joining in doing things on
a big scale. They are giving
thought to the anticipated needs of
tomorrow, as well as striving to
meet constantly changing needs
from day to day. Therefore, De-
troit has its part in contributing to
the lesson in the methods of pro-
gressive cities.
Detroit has made a fortunate be-
gining in making ready for its
growth. It has a system of main
thoroughfares which many larger
cities would do well to reproduce.
I was at once impressed by the city's
street system. Some of the larger
cities of the world are struggling
with traffic problems against which
Detroit, for all time, has fortified
itself. The city owes that system
to foresight, broadmindedness and
a great civic determination to build
a municipal structure that will
stand the test of the future. A
great part of Detroit's foundation
wort: was put in place before the
present generation took hold of
things, but the Detroit of today, de-
termined upon a program of pro-
gress, is making capital of that
earlier work, by providing the city
with a system of paved streets that
is without a rival in any city I have
visited.

Plan Worth Any City's Attention.

It is not my intention to stamp
Detroit's street system as perfect,
because I recognize that greater
growth will make some changes
necessary in the central portion of
the city. But as to the general
layout of radial thoroughfares the
width of main streets, the frequtMcy
of open air spaces, the connecting
system of wide boulevards, and the
tendency toward universal well-
paved driveways, Detroit presents
a situation that is remarkable and
well worth the attention of any city
