navies, and is even now nosing
her way across the Atlantic in a
grim game of hide and seek with
the enemy. Incidentally, the
story of the discovery of Paul
Koenig's Jewish origin is one of
those that have given rise to the
saying that "truth is stranger
than fiction."
George Kcenip- , who lives at
167 East Fourth street, New
York, is one of the two millions,
more or less, of our co-religion-
ists who have come to this land
to make it their home. Accord-
ing to the Jewish Daily News of
New York, he was recently read-
ing the newspaper account of the
arrival of the Deutschland, when
he noted that the name of its in-
trepid captain was Paul Koenig.
"Flow strange," he muttered to
himself. "My brother bore that
name." Further on his eye en-
countered a newspaper picture of
the gallant little skipper, and in it
he recognized the familiar fea-
tures of his brother, whom he had
not seen since twenty years be-
the combined English and French fore the brothers had parted at

thik,great war has demonstrated
beyond the possibility of dispute,
it is that Jewish courage and
heroism is as alive today as it was
in the days of the Maccabees.
Jews have furnished far more
than their proportion of volun-
teers in England and France, and
in the trenches of Flanders and
France there beats more than one
brave Jewish heart. In the list
of those decorated for deeds of
valor will be found a surprisingly
large number of Jewish names,
and Jewish promotions are of
daily occurrence in all of the ar-
mies of Europe. Recently, the
world has had fresh prdof of the
bravery and courage of the Jew,
for Paul Koenig is of Jewish ex-
traction.
Paul Koenig, as everyone un-
514:iiibtedly
knows, is the jovial
\_.,
and daring skipper of the
Deutschland, the German subma-
rine which crossed the ocean and
reached our shores after having
eluded all of the battleships of
