Dr. J. L. Magnes Sails for Europe to In-
vestigate the Condition of the
Jews in the War Zone

Will Visit Russia, Poland, Germany and Austria to Insure a
Proper Distribution to War Relief Funds

Dr. J. L. Mapes, head of the
New York Kehillah, and acting
vice-chairman of the American
Jewish Relief Committee, sailed for
Europe on the S. S. "Frederick
VIII." 'Wednesday afternoon as
chairman of the relief commission
to investigate the condition of the
J ews in th e war zone. Ile was ac-
companied by his secretary, Alex-
ander Dushkin.
Dr. Magnes will visit Russia, Po-
land, Germany and Austria, and
will spend some time ill Petrograd,
Berlin, Vienna, Moscow, Kiev,
Nijni Novgorod, Warsaw, Kovno
and \Vilna.
This commission is being sent by
the Joint Distribution Committee—
representing the American Jewish
Relief Committee, the Central Re-

obtain assurance, through its own
representatives, that everything pos-
sible is being done to relieve the dis-
tress that has been brought upon
the Jews through the war.
"It will be the special aim of the
commission to see that the needy
Jews in the remote villages and
towns shall receive assistance. In
Poland, Galicia and Lithunia there
are hundreds of thousands of Jews
whose condition has been rendered
deplorable through the military tac-
tics of the contending armies, who
are now cutting off from the regu-
lar methods of communication by
rail, and even by mail. The com-
mission will attempt to establish
means of relieving them.
"It is intended to establish bu-
reaus in the capitals, which will be
directed by American Jews, as long
as the need for their residence in
Europe for distributing the relief
funds continues.
"Secretary Lansing has given as-
surances of complete protection and
co-operation on the part of the offi-
cials of the United States govern-
ment, as well as of the governments
of Russia, Germany and Austria-
Hungary."
