THE JEWISH CHRONICLE 16 Irving Berlin and Charley Chaplin Two Jews Who Have Made a Fortune Amusing the American Public The brief story of two Jews at present ill the public eye, who cater to the amusement of the people, one as a writer of popular songs :and the other as an entertainer- •Irving Berlin and Charley Chaplin. There is scarcely any doubt but that the former is accumulating more wealth than (lid Guiseppi Verdi and Richard Wagner combined, and that the latter's earning capacity in one year is greater than that of Ed- win Booth, Edwin Forrest, Ma- cready and all the other compara- tively recent Shakespearean actors combined in the course of their en- tire lives. It also may be added incidentally that Goldberg, the newspaper car- toonist, also a Jew, rakes in a greater fortune every year than did Michael Angelo and all the other old masters rolled in one from the day of their recognition as artists until they passed to the great be- yond. This is not a speculative, philo- sophical argument, but merely a statement of hard, cold facts. Irving Berlin is probably the most successful writer of popular songs in the country. Berlin has never written a grand opera or a senti- mental song about somebody's grave where the lilies grow, or about some rippling stream in the sunny south, but he has written ragtime and sim- ilar songs that netted him a fortune, and he goes about it in a thorough- ly businesslike manner. Some of these went through editions of a million copies, and as a matter of fact Berlin himself claims a song does not pay and cannot be called a real hit until at least 500,000 copies have been sold. Berlin says that when his "Alexander's Rag- time Band" was a big hit the re- port was started among publishers that he paid a negro $10 for the manuscript and published it under his own name. "I told them," Ber- lin said, in telling the story, "if they could produce the negro and lie had another hit like Alexander in his system I would choke it out of him and give him $20,000 in the bar- gain." It doesn't seem possible, does it, that Berlin realized many, many times over more for his Alexander's Ragtime Band" than did Verdi for his El Trovatore." Everybody knows Chaplin, his moving picture antics, his feet and his mustache and everybody has read of his recent half a million per annum contract. He is English by birth and they say that his father's name was Caplan. Neither is it necessary to expati- ate about Goldberg's cartoons and their accompanying printed expla- nations, which would do credit to the best huniorous writer. The reason ? There doesn't seem to be any except that they caught the public taste at the psychological moment. Or did they create a public taste ? 111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111W1111111 111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111119111110111111111111 Mr. David Hirsch, a well known business man of Louisville, Ky., and prominent in civic affairs, has re- cently been re-elected a member of the Louisville Board of Trade. Runkel, a representa- tive of the American Red Cross, who has just returned from his sec- ond visit in Poland, declares that while economically the condition of the Jews in the occupied provinces is very bad, politically the Jews fare very well under the German regime. The Russians had practically deso- lated the provinces before their re- treat. In Lublin alone, 20,00() Jews are without homes and 5,000 Jew- esses are nervous wrecks from the maltreatment to which they were subjected by the Russian soldiery. The bread line every day in Lublin extends over several streets, and consists mainly of poor, emaciated women and children. On the other hand, the Germans have practically liberated the two and a half mil- lions of Jews in the province. Je•-___ ish children are now allowed to ob- tain an education. Jews are al- lowed to rise to high offices in the civil government. He related that the Germans found hundreds of prisoners tied hand and foot, ' in some of the underground prisons of Warsaw, who have been in the same condition for weeks, The Woman's Club, of Sinai Temple, Chicago, Ill., surprised their rabbi, Rev. Emil G. Hirsch, last Sunday morning. They sent a $5,000 automobile to his resi- dence, and the chauffeur was in- structed to inform Dr. Hirsch that the car was his.
