THE JEWISH CHRONICLE

Showered With Honors Young Rabbin-
ical Student Reaches Detroit

Harry Z. Gordon, Senior in the Jewish Theological
Seminary, Now Home With Parents, Has
Won High Distinction. •

After a year's absence from this
city, Harry Z. Gordon is returning
to Detroit from the New York Jew-
ish Theological Seminary, where he
is a student, to spend the summer
with his parents.
It is safe to say that but few of
his classmates have achieved the
distinction attained by Mr. Gordon.
Graduating with high honors from
New York University in 1914, he
entered Columbia University the
following year, and has just re-
ceived from that institution a de-
gree of Master of Arts. His work
was done mainly in the Philosophy
and in the Indo-Iranian Depart-
ments, his master's thesis being on
the subject of "The History of
Jews in Persia during the Sasanian
Period (200-500 C. E.)." The ma-
terial for the thesis was derived
largely from original sources, such
as Persian manuscripts, etc.
At the seminary Harry Z. Gor-
don held many distinguished offices.
He was elected treasurer of the stu-
dent body for 1914-15 and in the
same year was chosen to the high
position of Managing Editor of the
Student Annual, the seminary
scientific publication.
Moreover, Mr. Gordon has been
private secretary to the late Pro-
fessor Schechter, who was perhaps
the greatest scholar which Judaism

served as secretary of the Jewish

year. This committee is composed

B'NAI B'RITH MEMBERS OR-
GANIZE SOCIAL CLUB.

New Organization Will Be Com-
posed of Members of B'Nai
B'Rith Exclusively—Com-
mittee Appointed.
Members of Pisgah Lodge No.
34, I. 0. B. B., have long felt the
want of a social organization, simi-
lar to those existing in other cities
and which are such prominent fac-
tors in the social life of their com-
munity. It is to supply this need
that a movement was inaugurated
by members of the local chapter
at the bi-weekly meeting of the lat-
ter for the founding of such an or-
ganization.
The new club will be known as
the B'nai B'rith Club, and will be
restricted in membership only to
those who are affiliated with the
order. Its aims will be purely
social in nature, as distinguished
from the benevolent and philan-
thropic purposes of the order in
general. The following organiza-
tion committee has been appointed :
Adolph Freund, chairman ; Bernard
B. Ginsburg, Louis James Rosen-
berg; Simon D. Rosenzweig, Sam-
uel J. Rhodes, Sylvan S. Grosner
and Nathaniel H. Goldstick.

Anti-Jewish Propaganda Grow-
ing in Russia.
The following appeal appeared in
the Russkoyc Zna;nya of Petrograd
under date of March 23, 1916. This
is one of numerous articles which
are now appearing regularly in the
anti-Semitic press of RusSia. From
private sources, the American Jew-
ish Committee has learned that the
propaganda to discredit the Jews of
Russia has reached extraordinary
dimensions and is being both in-
directly and officially encouraged by
various departments of the Russian
Government :

CHRISTIANS, WATCH YOUR
CHILDREN !
An idea of the manner in which
the persecution of the Jews is now
conducted by the anti-Semitic
press of Russia is afforded by an
appeal published on March 23 in
No. 56 in the Russkoye Znantya,
one of its leading journals. It
reads :
"Christians, Watch Your Chil-
dren ! The Jewish Passover is ap-
proaching. The days are now com-
ing, when the misanthropic Jewish
religion requires the pure blood of
a child, the blood of an innocent
Christian child.
