Organization of 500 Jewish Women
Devoted to Relieve the Ill

Bicur Cholem Seniors Do Effective Work for Sick and
Needy.

One of the largest and most ac-
tive clubs in the city, devoted to
charitable purposes and relief work,
is the Bicur Cholem Seniors, with
a membership of close to 500 Jew-
ish women.
The purpose of the club is well
expressed in its Hebrew name
which means "succoring the ill."
It fills a distinctive need in the city.
As is well known, those who have
lived in Detroit for less than a year
are termed transients, and in case
of want receive no help from any
of the organized Jewish charities.
It is these unfortunates, primarily,
that the society helps by providing
them with the services of an effi-
cient physician, supplying them
with drugs, and furnishing them
with groceries and other necessi-
ties. Cases are taken care of im-
mediately upon being reported.
The ladies of the club do the in-
vestigating themselves. The funds
needed to further this noble work
are obtained from the yearly dues
of $3, as well as from the amounts
of money given the club by the
Bicur Cholem Juniors, who give
many affairs, the proceeds of which
are used exclusively in helping the
Seniors administer to the needs of
the poor and sick.

The Bicur Cholem Seniors meet
once a month, in the Beth Jacob
Synagogue on Montcalm street.
The officers of the society are :
Mrs. David Goodman, president ;
Mrs. A. Brandt, vice-president ;
Mrs. M. Kauffman, secretary, and
Mrs. D. Zemon, treasurer.

Detroit Driving Club Will Hold
Annual Blue Ribbon Meeting.

What promises to be the greatest
racing in the history of the trotting
turf will be seen during the thirty-
second annual Blue Ribbon meet-
ing of the Detroit Driving Club at
the state fair grounds, July 24 to
29. To insure contests in every
mile the racing will be on the three-
heat plan, in other words, every
heat is a separate race. This will
eliminate the laying-up or waiting
until the pace-makers are exhaust-
ed. The only way a horse can win
is to be among the first four in
every heat and there will be just
three heats to every race.

The problem is solved !

So popular is this system with
the horsemen of the country, that
the entry in the fixtures exceeds
that of any other year, and the final
payment finds a larger list of eligi-

The Merchants' & Manufactur-
ers' stake of $10,000 is unusually
attractive, for one of the lot has
shown 2:03 ability and half a dozen
are better than 2:05 trotters, so the
record for the stake is certain to be
lowered if conditions are favorable.
The same speed characterizes all
of the events. On Monday, July

$1,200 each. The Board of Com-
