Convention of American Zionists Feat-
ured by Sensational Events

Dr. Harry Friedenwald Resigns : Mrs. Joseph Fels Gives Million Dollars

The Federation of American
Zionists held its annual conven-
tion at Philadelphia commencing
Friday, June 30th. An extended
program, including a reception to
the delegates, a large mass meet-
ing at the Metropolitan Opera
House on Sunday evening, a chil-
dren's parade, and various confer-
ences by the intercollegiate Zion-
ists, the Hadassah Society, and
other Zionist groups, featured the
convention..
At the executive session of the
Provisional Committee which
convened at Hotel \\Talton on
Sunday morning, Justice Louis
D. Brandeis, the honorary presi-
dent, presided. The report of the
Executive Committee was pre-
sented by Mr. Jacob de Haas, its
secretary.

Convention Indorses Congress
Movement.

. One of the vital questions be-
fore the convention was that of
the Jewish Congress. The reso-
lution introduced by Dr. Max
Margolis of Cleveland, chairman
of the Congress Committee, that
the Convention officially indorse
the Congress movement, created
a storm of discussion. Dr. Solis
Cohen, Dr. Frank Schechter and
others were outspoken in their
belief that the movement for a
Jewish Congress had no direct
connection with the work of the
Federation of American Zionists.
Messrs. Schmaryau Levin, Joseph
Barondcss and others contended,
on the contrary, that no move-
metit,for a Jewish Congress could
be a success without the official
co-operation of American Zion-
ists. A vote resulted in an over-
whelming victory for the resolu-
tion introduced by Dr. Margolis.
The verdict of the convention was
greeted by deafening applause
from the delegates and spectators.
Following this action of the
cony entio n, Professor Henry
Friedenwald announced his resig-
nation from the Provisional Com-
mittee of the organization. Pro-
fessor Friedenwald is President
of the Federation of American
Zionists and only recently re-
signed from membership in the
American Jewish Committee be-
cause of its alleged undemocratic
methods. The reason he gave for
his resignation from the Provis-
ional Committee was the act of
the convention in officially in-
dorsing the Congress movement,
an act which he considered un-
justifiable. The resignation was
not accepted by the members of
the Provisional Committee.

Mrs. Joseph . Fels Gives Million
for Colonization.
A great stir was occasioned by
the announcement of Mrs.. Joseph
Fels, widow of the great philan-
thropist and single taxer, that she
would donate the sum of a million
dollars towards the establishment
of a single-tax colony in Palestine.
The expenditure of the money will
be directed and controlled by Jus-
tice Brandeis, who was largely in-
strumental in inducing NIrs. Fels to
make her magnificent gift.
The reports of Mr. Louis Lipsky
for the Federation of American
Zionists and of the chairmen of its
many subordinate branches
throughout the land revealed a
splendid growth both in member-
ship and in funds.

Order Will Send Its Own Com-
mission to Seek Rights for
Jews in Europe.
The Independent Order B'nai
B'rith will not participate in either
the projected Conference or Con-
gress, according to the statement
issued by the Executive Commit-
'
tee last Friday. The announce-
ment followed a two days' session
in the 11'nai B'rith headquarters at
2307 Broadway. The reason given
for this decision is that "as an in-
ternational organization it would be
unwise in the spirit of its constitu-
tion to commit the European mem-
bership to the action of an as-
semblage composed exclusively of
American Jews."
The important Jewish problems
arising out of the oppression of our
people in Russia and Roumania,
accentuated by the war conditions,
received the consideration.: 01 the
committee and resulted in the adop-
tion of a plan which "it is hoped
will answer the call of all humane
people for the granting of equal
rights to Jews in the countries
where they are now grievously op-
pressed." The plan provides for a
commission of two or more to visit
European countries and put before
representatives of the various gov-
ernments the claims of the Jewish
people of the world for equal and
political rights.
In addition to sums heretofore
appropriated the committee ordered
$5,000 for Roumanian relief.
Henry Morgenthau, ex-Ambassa-
dor of the United States to Tur-
key and member of the order, was
unanimously elected a member-at-
large of the Executive Committee.
Those present at the meeting
were President Adolf Kraus, of
Chicago; Simon Wolf, of Wash-
ington, D. C. ; Lucius L. Solomons,
of San Francisco ; Jacob Furth, of
