Local Admirers of Hebrew Poet
Celebrate Anniversary
The Twenty-fifth Poetic Jubilee of Byalik Observed
by Detroit Followers.
Twenty-five years have passed
since Chayim Nachman 1 yalik
wrote his first Hebrew poem, "To
the Bird." This event was com-
memorated by the Jews of this city,
when on Saturday night members
of the "Hashachar," a local socie-
ty for the study of the Ilebrew
language, and their friends gath-
ered at the auditorium of the
Shaarey Zedek synagogue to honor
the great Hebrew poet. The prin-
cipal address of the evening was
delivered by Rabbi A. M. Ilersh-
nla n.
Speaking of Byalik, Rabbi Hersh-
man said: "Wherever Hebrew is
spoken, men speak of the man who
helped to make a new era in He-
brew literature by his monumental
works, Chayim Nachman Ilya
While all of his works are of a
uniformly high standard, the most
noted - is his "Prophecy of Nemi-
row," a story of the Kishinev Nlas-
sacre written in words of blood. It
would not be too strong to say that
since the time of Jeremiah there
has been no poet among our people
Beth Abraham Synagogue.

Nvill be the duty of this committee
to collect enough money among the
members to purchase a Torah and
present it to the synagogue. Five
dollars has already been pledged at
the last meeting.
The purpose of this organization
is to get the young Jewish-Ameri-
can boy to attend religious services
in the synagogue Saturday morn-
ing. Any young man of good moral
character can join by mailing appli-
cation to Milford Klein, chairman
of the membership commitee, care
of the synagogue. The officers of
the organization are as follows :
who \vas equal to Byalik in his ex-
pression of the Jewish pain. As
said by Dr. A. Levinson, the great
Hebrew critic :
" 'He takes his reader to the
"City of Slaughter," to the streets
and by-ways Where the blood of
Jewish martyrs was poured in
streams. He shows him all the car-
nage in its horror and vividness ;
he draws his attention away from
the sunlight, the spring, that glows
in spite of the scenes of darkness,
and forces him to look at the heaps
of broken furniture, the blood-
stained stones ; he does not let his
reader go until he has taken him
further, into the very cellars and
hiding places, where his brethren
sought refuge but found their
death. The very rats of the cellars
he calls on as witness to tell the tale
of horror, the story of the merci-
less killing of children before the
eyes of their mothers, the heartless
slaughter of the old by beating and
choking. Here in the cellars, on
the roofs, he finds the spirits of
those who were killed ; he hears the
cry of "Why and \\Therefore ?" ' "
I tarry Schlussel, president ; AI Mord
