THE JEWISH CHRONICLE
Thirty - one Candidates Admit-
ted to B'Nai B'Rith Lodge
Noted Visitors Present at Impressive
Initation Ceremonies
Thirty-one aspirants to member-
ship in the order of B'Nai B'Rith
realized their ambitions last Mon-
day evening, when Pisgah Lodge
held its annual initiation ceremonies
at the auditorium of the Shaarey
Zedek Synagogue. Mr. Benjamin
Samuels of Chicago, President of
the District No. 2, and Dr. Rudolph
I. Coffee, Director of the Social
Service Department of the Order,
conducted the initiation and spoke
at the open meeting which followed.
Mr. Samuels told of the great
achievements of the Order in the
past, and of the work which it
aimed to do in the future. Dr.
Coffee described the social service
activities of the Order, and advised
the newly admitted members to take
an active part in it.
"The three great movements
which the Order of B'Nai IrRith
is advancing," said I)r. Coffee, "are
the Free Loan Association Move-
ment, the Big Brother 'Movement,
and the Prisoners' Welfare Move-
ment. The Free Loan 'Movement
aims at the establishment of Free
Loan Societies where the poor and
needy among us may borrow money
without having to pay any interest
on it. Such associations are being
successfully conducted in many of
our large cities, and last year
loaned out over a million dollars.
The Rural Credit Bill, which only
recently passed Congress, is an out-
growth of the Free Loan Associa-
tion idea.
"The Big Brother :Movement,
which is another of those under-
taken by the B'Nai WRith, has
within it untold possibilities for
good. Briefly, it means that every
man who is a member of the Order
shall pick out some poor waif, some
youth who is straying from the
straight path and interest himself
in the latter—get him a position if
necessary, advise him on the prob-
lems which he has to face, in short
—to be his big brother.
"The Prisoner's Welfare idea is
much along the same lines. There
are thousands of Jewish prisoners
today, languishing in the jails, peni-
tentiaries and prisoners of our cities
and states, who have no one to visit
them to say a kind word to them.
Every Ben B'Rith should take upon
himself the duty of visiting the
Jewish prisoners in his locality."
Rabbi Leo M. Franklin, who was
in the audience, in response to the
call upon him of President J. Mil-
ler, said:
"Time was when Pisgah Lodge
was the pride of this district, when
its men did things. But for the
past few years, to my sincere re-
gret, the lodge has accomplished
little. Let this evening be an in-
spiration to its members for greater
and more effective work. Let them
leave this meeting with a renewed
determination to carry out that
splendid program which the Order
of . B'Nai WRith has outlined for
itself."
