Have We Outgiown the Bible?

•

(Continued from page 27,

their minds for inspiration. \\Then
my own heart is troubled and 1
know not what the next hour may
hold, how can 1 find stimulus great-
er and higher than by remembering
the words of Job in his trouble, "1
know that my Redeemer liveth."
0- by turning anew to that wonder-
ful shepherd song as it is called,
"The Lord is my shepherd, I shall
not want ?"
-And so, though the skepticism be
rife and materialism rule our lives,
somehow the very conditions of our
being turn us hack and ever back
to this great source book of Israel's
consolation and Israel's strength.
We may be never so sure of our-
selves, the time comes when we
must go back to our Bible for sup-
port. We may be never so boastful
of the achievements of our age, we
must turn back to the Bible to find
the inspiration for our accomplish-
ments. And the reason for it is
plain enough; life at its highest in-
terprets itself not in the terms of
the physical and not even in terms
of the intellectual. Life at its high-
est interprets itself in the terms of
the spiritual and the moral. The
Bible is the great text book of re-
ligion and morality. And so, in the
moments when life is touched at its
highest and its deepest, at the time
when the soul cries out for strength
and comfort, it is not to the seething
world that men turn, it is not to the
schools with their arguments and
their quibbles, but it is to the treas-
ures of the spirit that have been pre-
served for us in this great Book of
books, which it has been the Jew's
pfiyilege to give to the world. Nay,
we have not outgrown the Bible,
but times like these emphasize in-
creasingly the need of that Bible
fOr our guidance, in our human re-
lationships and in our aspirations
toward God and the good!
