THE JEWISH CHRONICLE The Y. M. H. A.—An Organization for Young Jewish Men By JACOB NATHAN, President I T will • doubtless surprise a great many of our most prom- inent Jews to know that De- troit has an organization that is endeavoring the parallel the work of the Y. M. C. A. I do not say that the Yoimg. Men's Hebrew Association is accomplishing fur the Jewish youth of this city what the Young Men's Christian Asso- ciation is accomplishing for the Gentile youth. Were that true, the name "Y. M. H. A." would be a familiar household word in De- troit ; whereas on the contrary, mention the Y. M. H. A. to a large percentage of our best informed Jews and they will not know what you are talking about. At the outs0 let me state . just what the aims and purposes of the Y. M. H. A. are. If the reader can comprehend 'the significance of this declaration ;of intentions, , then surely we will be in a gocd way to enlist . a great; deal' of sup- port and assistance that by every right should be ours: "To provide a place of 'Recrea- tion without Temptation.' "To improve the social status of the Jewish young man. - "To provide a general meeting place in the midst of clean, whole- some surroundings. • "To create an effective, far- reaching social center. "To assist in the furthering of Jewish education by the means of debating societies, classes in He- brew, bible study and lecture courses. • "To participate in the general work and responsibilities of the Jewish community. "To help unify the Jews of De- troit. ', "To create in the Jewish youth high standards of morality and manliness. "To make the Jewish youth fit to assume his responsbilitics as a member of the Jewish commu- nity." Laudable purposes, you will ad- mit ? Certainly. A. drifted along aimlessly and without definite 'purpose or perspective. It became essentially a gymnasium organization, and it is presumed, thereby lost favor in the Jewish community that knew of its existence. Not that a Jewish young men's gymnasium is not entitled to the support of the Jew- ish community, but that is why the Y. M. H. A. almost entirely died out. • A 'reorganization took place last winter.
