A Noble Champion of Judaism
Passes Away

The Death of Karl Eoetvoes

Israel lost a true friend through
the death of koetvoes, one of
Hungary's most noted publicists
and statesmen, who died at Pula-
pest, .\pril 13. His death recalls
the disgraceful event of Tisza-
Eszlar, the first notable ritual mur-
der charge of modern times in west-
ern F.urope. The memory of our
present day Jews has been over-
taxed (luring the last thirty years
with so many sad events that it will
not be out of place to give a review
of this Cast. (Al tyhirh the reader,
desirous to obtain more in forma-
6011, may inform himself by read-
ing the article in the Jewish kncy-
clopedia, written by the late Sig-
mund 1\lannheimer. )11, a Sabbath,
the first of April, 1 882, ksther Soli-
mosi, a fourteen-year-old servant
girl in the village of Tisza-Vszlar,
went on an errand to the village
store, from which she never re-
turned.' After a few days of use-
less search, the mother of the child
stated that she had information that
the child was murdered by Jews for
ritual purposes. Seven years previ-
ously an antisemitic movement had
been started by Victor de Istoczi, at
member of the I lungarian diet. In
1878, during the sessions of the
Perlin Congress, Istoczi, anticipat-
ing the Zionist movement, noted ill
the diet that the sultan be compelled
to relinquish Palestine, and that all
Jews of Europe should be deported
there. ill this way the political at-
mosphere of I lungarY was sur-
charged with antisemitism, and tut
doubtedly" influenced by this, th-
village mayor, an ignorant peasant
and various county officials, seri-
ously took up the charge, produced
by the peasant woman. A peculiar
incident gave additional support 1);
this malicious libel. The small con-
gregation of the village had adver-
tised for a I Iazan and Shochet, and
three candidates from out of town
were heard on trial. .\bout the
t•same time a local committee, con-

stituted as a keth Din, held a ses-
sion in the synagogue to arbitrate a

case. These facts were at once de-
\ eloped hv malicious schemers into

a Jewish council, which had called
priests to perform a sacrificial act.
.\ few weeks later the body of the
girl was lished out of the Tisza
river by J ewish ra ftsmen, who ill
this section of the country are
usually employed to float the logs
from the Carpathian lountains
down to the large trading centers
of I lungary. The body was natur-
ally in a state of advanced decom-
position, but was absolutely identi-
fied by the garments. The anti-
semites, however, were not willing
to lose such an opportunity and de-
clared that the Jews had substituted
the body of another girl in order to
clear the murderers. So to the orig-
inal defendants a new hatch was
added. Pv the usual third degree
methods a witness was procured, in
the son of one of the Shochets,
Murhz Schwarz. who, kept ineon1-
11111111Cado, was coached to S'aV that
lie saw through the keyhole of the
synagogue the whole procedure of
the ritual murder, in which his fa-
ther took a prominent part. Icarl
koetvoes, born in 1842, who had al
ready established at great reputation
as publicist, politician and criminal
lawyer . , was engaged for the de-
fense. The trial took more than a

\Ta • , and FluclVoyS conducted the
dcfcl1SC Su brilliantly, that the pros-

ecutor, on ,\ugust '3, 1883, with-
drew the case. It is needless to sav
that the real antisemites were not
convinced. They had no conviction
to change, for they needed the case
as an instrument for political agita-
tion. .\ugust Ridding, the Catholic,
and .Adolph Stoecker, the Protes-
tant minister, continued to quote
Tisza-Eszlar as an argument on
their side, and to this we owe 'the
brilliant apology for . 111(1:11S111, \Vrit -
ten by the noble champion of truth,
and orthodox P rotestant theolog-
ian, Franz Delitzsch.
