America', 'elvish Perini THE JEWISH CHRONICLE 2 Aleichem—translated into English so that every Jewish child can read them, for as I have just said, they do represent the soul of our peo- ple ; but I want them to read these great writings as Americans who retain respect for their fathers and their forefathers. Today we can- not read any longer the wonderful sayings and works of our great Jewish writers, men like Saadia Gaon, Maimonides, Iben Gabirol, Judah Halevy, in the original text ; we read them in the language we can understand and we are just as much attached to them and they touch our souls and our hearts just as much as—perhaps more so than —if we should read them in the original language. These men who have erected this wonderful building in the heart of the city, to which their children are to be sent—to give our posterity the opportunity to become more and more attached to Jewish law and to Jewish literature—have rendered great service not only to Judaism but to the American people. When I came here and looked at this gath- ering, the thoughts that came to my mind were those wonderful' words of the heathen seer that have come down to us from hoary ages: "How pleasant are thy tents, 0 Jacob, thy dwelling places." It is teaching like that which will be taught under this roof that will perpetuate the beau- tiful spirit of the Jewish home. My friends, all I can say is, as I have said already, be a good Jew and a good American. But it is not good Americanism to claim sepa- rateness, to claim that we are a group of people who must live their separate lives irrespective of our surroundings and of the Jewish re- . ligion. Anyone who claims such cannot be a loyal American. The Attack Upon the American Jewish Committee An Answer to Israel Goldberg By LOUIS MARSHALL Editor The Jewish Chronicle: The American Jewish Commit- tee recently issued a booklet, en- titled 'The Jews in the Eastern War Zone,' which undertook to depict the cruelties and indignities to which the Jews have been subjected, especially in Poland. A copy was submitted to His Holiness Benedict XV, with a petition praying him to exert his powerful influence to ameliorate conditions. This has called forth a reply from the Holy See, which is a virtual encyclical, and has been followed by directions to the Catholic clergy of Poland, admonishing them to use their best endeavors to put an end to the per- secution which has prevailed." It was not, therefore, the Ameri- can Jewish Committee that de- scribed the noble utterance of Pope Benedict XV as a virtual encyclical, nor was the committee responsible for the statement that it was fol- lowed by an admonition to the Catholic clergy of Poland. Yet the insinuation is made by this super- critic, in the fullness of his ignor- ance, that the committee, through its agents (of whose existence it has no knowledge), has been en- gaged in making false and mislead- ing statements concerning the Papal response—"the only voice that has conic from the wilderness." it is significant that, of all the world, the - NOTE.—In the last issue of the Jewish Chronicle appeared an article by Israel It has of late become apparent, Goldberg criticizing the American Jewish even to the unitiated, that there ex- Committee for having petitioned the Pope ists in certain quarters a systematic to exert his influence in behalf of the Jews of Poland.
