held an open meeting at Foresters'
Temple on Sunday, May 7. The
feature of the evening's program
was a debate on Zionism. Ellis
Thal warmly esjioused the cause of
Zionism and the view of the non-
Zionist were very forcibly present-
y l by David A. Wolsey. A large
audience was present and applaud-
ed the efforts of the speakers. The
musical part of the program was
furnished by Nliss Rena Thal, who
rendered a very pleasing vocal solo.

Levinsohn.

Word has been received of the
death in the Philippines of NIiss
Rae Smit of Detroit. Nlis Smit went
to the islands over a year ago with

The Young People's Hebrew So-
ciety held its regular meeting Tues-
day evening, Nlay 9. The evening
was spent in general discussion of
current events. The society is
planning its big second annual Nlay
party which will be held at the
auditorium Tuesday evening, Nlay
16. Elaborate decorations and
novelties have been procured and
the young people expect to make
this one of the most successful
events of the season.

Noted Detroit Attorney to Speak
to Shaarey Zedek Organization.

The officers of the Men's Club
of Shaarey Zedek have been suc-
cessful in securing Mr Charles C.
Simons to address the organization
at its next meeting on Sunday
morning at 11 :15 a. in, at the ves-
try rooms of the Shaarey Zedek
Synagogue.
While the subject of Mr. Simon's
address has not been announced,
the mere fact of his speaking is suf-
ficient assurance that his address
will be far above the average. Mr.
Simons has the reputation of being
one of the most forceful public
speakers in the city, a reputation
that dates far back to his college
days, when h e was the University
of Michigan's foremost orator.
It is expected that a record-
breaking attendance will be present.
Mr. Harry B. Keidan, president of
the society, extends a cordial invi-
tation to the public to hear Mr.
Simons.

Fifty-four members have joined in
the last two months, and over four
times that number will be enrolled
at the next open meeting of the or-
ganization which will take place
early in the fall, and the date of

Early in March Miss Smit was
stricken with a tropical fever from
which she died.
Miss Smit was 28 years of age
and a very educated and talented
voting woman, having graduated
from Michigan Agricultural Col-
lege. She was also prominent in
philanthropic and social work, and
for two years held the post of ma-
tron for the Jewish Free Fresh Air
Camp. The remains will be
brought to Detroit for burial to
the parents, NIr. and NI rs. Jacob
Smit, of 104 NI edbury Avenue.

Mr. Jacob Billikopf of Kansas
City has been elected a member of
the Alpha Zeta Pi fraternity, com-
posed of the faculty of the Univer-
sity of Missouri, where Mr. Billi-
kopf will soon deliver a series of

meeting of the season at the home
