Tragic Death of Brunswick
Rabbi.
During the burial of Lieutenant
Kurt Elias, who fell on the bat-
tlefield, the Chief Rabbi, of Bruns-
wick, Dr. Rulf, who officiated in
the cemetery of the Brunswick
Jewish community, was seized by
a stroke. Dr. Rulf was just offer-
in up the final prayer in the midst
of the mourners, among whom
Was also the Duke of Brunswick's
lieutenant with a wreath, when
the aged rabbi suddenly fell un-
conscious upon the ground and
(lied in the hands of two doctors
who happened to he present. Dr.
Rulf, who was sixty-four years of
age, enjoyed great esteem in the
Duchy of Brunswick.

Equal Rights for Jewish Mer-
chants.
Various corporations, such as
the Commercial Treaty Society
and the Hansa Bund, have recent-
ly made representations to the
German Imperial Chancellor con-
cerning Jewish merchants travel-
ing in Russia. The Association of
German Commercial Travelers
has now renewed its petition of
1911 for giving Jewish travelers
the same rights as non-Jewish
travelers.

An Anti-Semitic Outburst.
That anti-Semitism in this
country has by no means been
laid to rest is proved again by a
manifesto addressed by a Con-
servative Reichstag Deputy, Herr
von Bonin, to his electors. The
latter, who is an estate owner, de-
plores the change in the policy of
the Imperial Government, which
he describes as being "in the di-

the present attitude of the Social
Democracy and of Jewry. It
seems to regard it as a merit on
the part of these powers, and as
proof of change of view, that they
have voted the milliards and ap-
parently do their duty in the war.
Rut this is such a matter of
course and lies so much in their
own interest that I can see no
merit in it, . . . If our national
life is to become sound again, our
people to secure from this war not
merely a gain in land and people
but also a religious and moral re-
vival of the people's souls, a new
starting pint of political devel-
opment, then both these powers
must be rendered harmless for
our future policy."

"According to uninvestigated
