THE JEWISH CHRONICLE

PROVINCE OF CAUCASIA
CLOSED TO JEWS.

SLANDERER OF JEWISH
SOLDIERS PUNISHED.

The question whether Jews
should be permitted' to settle in
the province of Caucasia has
finally been settled by the Rus-
sian Government in the negative.
Although according to the gov-
ernment circular issued a few
months ago, Jews could reside
any‘yhere in the Empire, with the
exception of the provinces of
Moscow and Petrograd, the Gov-
ernor of the Caucasus province
was not willing to allow Jews to
settle in his province. At the
urgent appeals made by several
I )ouwa members, the govern-
ment authorities decided that
during the war Jews should not
be allowed to settle there, be-
cause the province is over-crowd-
ed with fugitive Armenians from
the Turkish provinces near by

A commercial traveler, Fred-
erick Wagner, who wrote to the
Connnander of the Third Ba•ar-
ian Army Corps in Nuremberg,
an anonymous accusation against
the commander of a local prison-
ers of ‘var camp and against two
Jewish soldiers engaged there on
duty, was sentenced by the Ba-
varian Court to one month's im-
prisonment for slander, and his
appeal to the German Imperial
Court of Justice was rejected.
The accusing letter, .which was
signed "A German Patriot," as-
serted that the lieutenant-colonel
ill charge of the camp was strong-
ly pro-French (there being
French prisoners in the camp),
and that a sergeant and an under-
officer, both of the Jewish faith,
who acted as interpreters among
the guard, abused their position
for profit in selling watches to
and playing cards with the pris-
oners. An investigation made by
the commander of the Third Ba-
varian Corps showed that the
charge was utterly baseless and
led to the apprehension of Wag-
ner as the annonymous slanderer.

According to a recent declara-
tion of Dr. Alfred Stern. the v.et-

a successor to Dr. M. Gudemann
as chief rabbi of Vienna is about
to be solved, even in the near fu-
ture. It appears that Dr. Nobel,
of Frankfurt, has the greatest
chances for an election to that
important post. The objection
to Dr. Nobel on the part of some
members of the Council is that he
is too orthodox. But, as a con-
temporary remarks, a little more
orthodoxy in a chief rabbi may
be rather a useful thing. "So far,
too much piety has done no harm
to anybody."
